Arizona Chickens

* I wish local hatcheries carried my Salmon Favorelle. I could use at least 3 more of her. I talk her and she conversates back. She's easy going and let's me handle her. Unfortunately I have to order her breed, from Texas. I'm absolutely dreading that. I don't wanna loose any hens via transport. *

My Welsummer does that. Talks, lets me pet and pick her up, just a sweet hen.

After 3 months of building and preparing I am ready for chicks. I really only wanted to start with about 6; however, I am having trouble getting less than 15 before June. I want specific breeds and don't want to wait three more months! Any ideas?

Where did you buy your stock? I live up in New River and I am anxious to fill my new coop and run! I only want 6 hens and most hatchery's have 15 minimum until June.
Very exciting! At least you got your building done first. I got chicks first, then had to rush to get the coop and run finished by the time they were ready to get out of the brooder!

You can try to get chicks locally. Both Western Ranchman and The Stock Shop carry chicks and they always look healthy when I've seen them. Pratt's and Mesa Feed Barn also have chicks but they often look sick so I wouldn't buy from them. The Stock Shop will let you special order chicks from their list they get from the hatchery so you could get the six breeds of chicks you want if they carry those specific breeds. I don't think you have to pay shipping if you order from them since they get large shipments of chicks anyway. Might be worth a try.

I am also in Tucson, and yes, they are laying. I have Jersey Giants, black Ameraucanas, partridge Cochins, red sex links, and black copper Marans. They are all laying, but have slowed considerably for the last month or so, still getting 8 to 10 eggs a day. If yours haven't started laying yet, they will very soon now.

P.S., let's not forget Baby Doll, my one and only Barred Rock. She is still giving me one extra large every day.

* I agree with the others. You can give them egg shells that are crushed up. I clean them with warm water, let them dry for a day, and then crush them up. My uncle, that passed away a few years ago, was well known in the chicken world. Everyone always asked him for tips. The best he ever gave me was about the egg shells. It gives them that extra protein and such, to help them produce eggs.

FIRST CHICKEN PEN UP THIS WEEKEND!

Got the first pen up this weekend, it is chain link, 10 x 30 x 6, made of modular 10 foot x 6 foot panels. Over the next month, will be adding 2 more identical pens, one on each side. The tarps over the top are a temporary fix until the other 2 pens are added, more to keep the chickens in than keep anything else out. This morning, I will start moving some of my Jersey Giants over from the old house, and I can start waking up to roosters crowing again!
