Arizona Chickens

So... Chicken math got to me at tsc today and I got 6 silkie chicks. 1 partridge which seems to be older then the others, 1 splash or paint, 2 buff, 1 white frizzled silkie who's going to have a single comb and light skin and another white one. Only two out of the six have the wrong comb and only the one has white skin!

I've been looking into Brahmas, Cochin, and Ameraucana. I don't know a lot yet but I'm looking for a very friendly breed that can tolerate the hot Arizona weather and some cold too. The Ameraucana of these three seem to be the best layers of the three. (Will only be raising for eggs and pets). If anyone has any other breed suggestions let me know. :)

I have read from other post, that most of the restrictions are not so much on the hens but on the roos because of crowing.
I have seen that as well which is fine by me, no roosters and a limited number of hens ok. My issue is that I cant find ANY information for the Sierra Vista City limits specifically. One more day then I can call them!!!

Also quick question for all you hot weather dwellers. :) Is it better to build a coop that seals up tight and is insulated with an evaporitive cooler set up in the summer? Or should I go for something that is nice and ventilated? The location I have pick out is pretty shady so there is that as well.

Definitely shady and well ventilated. Insulated, sealed coops are bad news in summer when the power goes out. They are also bad news in winter, when condensation and humidity buildup can cause lots of health problems.

For breeds so far I have Barred rocks, Sex links, Hatching Marans 4 types and have Isbars coming soon. Oh yes Cornish pure bred not Cornish X. I will be ordering some Cochins in a week or two the blue and partridge unless some of you have some ava. I am doing the Cochins because they go broody well and I can use them to hatch other eggs.

As for a coop ventilation is always best for respitory health of your girls.

Awesome, very eggciting.. What breed of chicken left you a prise?

I think it was an Australorp, but it could also be from one of my Barred Rocks. :idunno  I was so surprised to see it in the nesting box that at first I just stared at it, trying to process in my brain the appearance of a "real" egg next to the wooden "training eggs" I'd placed in the box. Then I started giggling like a lunatic, which pretty much scared my entire flock into running to the other end of the run as they eyed me warily.

Where is the hidden video when you wish you could rewind & watch..

awesome :fl they look gorgeous I have some Isbar chicks ordered. Should get them in early April
Can't wait to see what color their egg's will be.. We won't get any from a isbar hen for at least 4-5 months. But the SWA comb is turning red.. Turquoise egg's... :woot

The Isbar hens will only be 2 to 4 weeks old when I get them so it will be awhile to see the eggs. Waiting is so hard....

Our partridge rooster was our very first.. Clark Kent Sr. His comb got out of control with age, it looked like old chewed up bubble gum..

My Mother once told me "be careful what you wish for, You might get it"
Then on here, while I was complaining about the lack of layers.. I have 2 RSL and 1 Amuricana.
My Granddaughter talked me into 3 more Americana chicks last Oct.
So...... anyway....... someone on here told me to "be careful, that's how you get started"
Oh how true....... My 3 big girls are fantastic layers, I rarely get only 1 egg a day......... I think 1 RSL must lay every day with out a break.
Point is.... I only have 3 layers, eggs rolling every where and I'll have 3 more layers this fall.

I give to my kids, We have learned how much we love home made custard Ice cream
and I still have 3 non layers........

Soooo
Be Careful What you Wish For........ You Might Get IT
I wished for EGGS.....................

DH is converting the unused Horse shad into a chicken coop. We will keep the store bought roosts in it. But they will have LOTS of room to run now and it is predator safe. Should be a lot cooler this summer too. So I might not have to put a mister out there.

I'm just glad my husband hasn't set up the camera system yet. The last thing I need is for video of my first chicken egg dancing to make it to the internet.

I remember how excited I was when I got my first egg........... I still get a thrill and talk to my girls and thank them........ Hubby already told me that when they are to old to lay, that's just to bad, they are officially pets...... not for the stew pot.... :)
