Awesome, very eggciting.. What breed of chicken left you a prise?

I think it was an Australorp, but it could also be from one of my Barred Rocks.   I was so surprised to see it in the nesting box that at first I just stared at it, trying to process in my brain the appearance of a "real" egg next to the wooden "training eggs" I'd placed in the box. Then I started giggling like a lunatic, which pretty much scared my entire flock into running to the other end of the run as they eyed me warily. 

I just realized I spelt prize wrong, boy am I tired today.. That seems to happen when I have down time.. I do my best to catch up.. Going to bed early this evening..
BR have darker egg's.. I think any way.. Which chicken has a dark read comb? That is your gift giver..

Two of my girls have really red combs...one's an Aussie and the other is the BR. The eggs I'm getting (yes! Two now!) are a peachy-tan color. The Aussie is three weeks older so I'm betting it's her, but until/unless I see one of them in the nesting box I won't know for sure.

I am current feed my chick with phoenixorganicfeed.com Big Sky layer mash from the beginning. the problem my chick only eat the seed the mash left over they don't eat that, if i add water in they will eat, any best food out there in mesa I can get without add water in the food. I remember some one told me about that, but i can not find his post.
if some one has any idea mix your own feed for saving money please show me.

Yah i ferment my chickens feed they LOVE IT!! i use the liter glass mason jars. i put in 4 cups of feed and then fill up the rest up with water to the 1 liter mark and in 3 days... walla special food!! i have 14 two month old chicks in my coop and they have every crumb licked up from the bowl! I also provide some dry feed but its barely touched. This has saved me alot on cost cause it doubles the food size and more nutrient rich this feeds all of them for 1 day. and they will go through twice that easy of dry only. I just have 3 jars on hand and fill up one each day for three days and then it just stays a routine to empty one jar in the am and then fill it back up to sit

Also u can put down water containers in the shade for the chickens to soak there feet in cool water. That helps keep them cool aswell in the summer. Mint in icecubes and add that to there water dish helps keep them cooler. I read people that have done mint. Strawberrys. And lavender in a jello mold with water and froze that and gave it to the hens to peck at and eat in the shade. Keeps them busy and cool. Dont feed corn cause that can increase there body temp. pinterest has alot of great odeas for chickens. I have Rode Island reds. Ameracaunas. Black/lavender cross orpingtons and soon to have pure lavender orpingtons. Ancona and blue swedish ducklings

So here is what I found out from the city zoning lady.

#1) There is no city ordinance regarding this.
#2) In the city development codes under "Single Family Residence" is does not say anywhere that they are prohibited. Matter of fact it says NOTHING on the topic.
#3) There us an "Urban Ranching" zone that says they are permitted. Kicker? There is no such zone in the city.
#4) She told me the city consul was asked to add whether it was or was not allowed. It became so controversial that they only added the UR district section.
#5) When I asked her "So where does it say I CANT have them" her answer was only that what is there is about as clear as its going to get. In other words, but not in her words, as clear as mud.
#6) I asked her about fines and she said if they are called in, there is no fine, only a request to remove them. If the city has to remove them they charge you for the removal.


I'm not sure what to do with this information. Based on what is there......is it legal for them to take people chickens if it is not SPECIFICALLY stated that they are prohibited? Or am I to assume that because its NOT stated, it also not allowed?

Please help! I don't know what to do guys.

Well it never really specifies. But i live in a hoa and all it says is as long as there are no complaints on noise or smell who would know... so i would get them and not worry about it since it does not say u cant so i wouldnt worry about it. I even have a rooster in my flock with a nocrow collar and my neighbors cant hear him. I have asked. My ducks make a bit of noise but no worse than a dog would

What subdivision do u live in? i live in maricopa also. The only place that says u cant have chickens is cobble stones. But people still do... also it cant be that frowned upon when the pet club and the feed store both sell ducks and chicks to maricopa residence i live in maricopa meadows

venia tulip, the City can not cite you with a violation if there's nothing in the books. I have no idea how they can legally remove the chickens??? I'd call again and ask to speak to another planner or zoning code person. I'm going to guess you'll get a different answer from a different person. Might not be any more clear, but maybe you can piece the info together.



Ugh, I think I'm going to have to buy an electric fence for destructo dog. I put up another fence panel this weekend...he took 2 minutes to look at it and hopped right over it into the chicken yard. Is it possible to just e-fence a mere 10' section?

Oh, and Pretty Girl had a near death experience. She's smaller and more agile than the others, and she foolishly flew over into the dogs' yard. Found a bunch of her feathers in the dogs' "killing field"--not literally, it's where they destroy their dog toys, chew chunks of wood, whatever we're stupid enough to leave on the table out there (I see some socks and what is left of my daughter's soft sided lunch pack)...killing field below, now imagine a feather explosion joined the shreds.


Anyway, Pretty Girl seems okay, a very small tear wound on her back. She's eating, drinking, running around, and doesn't appear to be in pain. I'm surprised the dog(s) let her go once they got her? Maybe it was the thrill of the hunt and then they released her once they caught her? Would an e-fence also keep her in? Although, I hate to think she'd be dumb enough to fly back over. I'm also working with both dogs to train them around the chickens. Destructo dog is learning quickly, but the instant prey drive is strong in the lab.

Interesting dilemma. I was told that in Mesa, if you are in a UR or horse property you can have as many as you want, but in other areas you can only have up to 10, then they are considered pets, more than that they are considered farm animals. Maybe that is the way it is there and maybe that is why it is so unclear. Check on what the laws are for having "birds" in your yard. I don't think people in general complain unless you get a roo. I don't have 1 because they bother me. LOL

You may not need to go electric. I had this issue with my dogs before and i found this solution. Buy a roll of that thick welded wire and some fence staples. Tack the wire to the fence and presto..no more destructo dog.
