Arizona Chickens

I've hatched hundreds of tiny quail chicks but tonight I have my first chickens pipping their eggs.  I can hear some of them chirping already.  There are 21 from my hens, 8 from my sister's flock and 7 from Trader Joe's grocery store fertile eggs. I'm excited to have my first "giant" chicks hatching soon.  Most of them will go to live with my sister's flock, but some will be replacements for my aging hens.

Are you processing soon?

We live in Tucson and have had our "Girls" for just over 2 years.  We  noticed that they are a bit more uncomfortable during the real heat but they have shade and love to go under their house to cool off. Plenty of water is a given. They also get to roam the yard every evening.

What breeds do you have ?? I just planted some bulbs, Canis, and other vines.. I let them out last night and boy do they think they own the garden bed's.. I can not take my eye off them.. When they are out some doves come by to visit them..

The last of the hatching eggs I'll ever buy...maybe...possibly...probably not....arrived yesterday. I ordered a dozen frizzles and a dozen Silver Grey Dorkings. The shipper of the Dorking eggs did a HORRIBLE job with packaging. They sent extra eggs, but even with that there was so much breakage that I didn't get my full dozen AND the runny egg had gotten all over the remaining eggs. I had to clean off nearly all of them, which now, along with how much those eggs must have moved around in shipping, has me wondering if any of them will even hatch.

By comparison the frizzle eggs were packed beautifully AND they shipped a half a dozen more than I'd ordered. Wow!

So now I'm heading to the nearest feed store to buy a second incubator since mine simply won't hold that many eggs. :D   I think I may even throw a few of my own flock's eggs in there to see if any hatch. They've been consistently fertile for weeks, so....I may have some very funny little baby chick combinations in about a month from now.

Yeah, we only did shipped egg's once.. No success here with shipped egg's..

HI all I need some help  I just got home and the front of my Barred Rock roo was all bloody. It seems the hens at least the sexlink hens have decided to peck at his waddle which is very long. It bled a lot. Is there a way to stop the hens from doing that. If they keep it up he will bleed out. I moved him to a separate paddock for tonights. After I washed and blow dried him and put him back in with them they broke it open again. I might have to remove the sexlinks

Yeah your right, the comb or waddles never stops bleeding.. I would keep him separated for sure.. Do you have vetericyn ?

Hi Everyone,
Gkad, to see this, group is, active and going strong. It has been a few years since I checked in. Hoping to get some fertile chicken eggs and thought this might be the place to put a feeler out. If you have some, I'd love to hear ftom you. cheerfulheart2 at yahoo.com

What breeds are you looking for? Or are you looking for egg basket ? The top is from our flock, the chocolate colored ones are from @Sill
Jumbo quail, the light ones next to them are wild doves egg's and finally a duck egg..

Our duck, Lauren lay's just as much as our chicken's.. The family loves them more than the chicken's. I love the water feature..

no going to the feed store in a bit to get some stuff for him and will use pine tar or no peck stuff then put him back in with them It's no good to have a Roo if he can't breed the hens.

I've been fortunate in that most of my shipped eggs have worked out well, and my last hatch had a 90% success rate for my Dorkings.

Since I *ahem* HAD to buy a second incubator I decided to add some of my own flock's eggs to that hatching mix. I can't wait to check them in a week's time to see if any of them are fertile and hopefully developing.

LOL I am up to three bators I think that is why I started the chicken holics page to see who else is out there like me LOL

I have 2 golden cuckoo Maran teenage Roos that I was saving for dinner, but I'd like to see if someone else would like to adopt them. they are from good quality parentage, but I have too many Roos that I still have to process for dinner. pM me if you're interested.

Shipped eggs I have had anywhere from zero to 30% so I have since gone over to buying the chicks. I did have one that was right around 50% come to think of it and that one I know sent me fresh eggs only one to two days old so by the time I got them they were only 4 to 5 days. I think for the most part it is the people who send eggs over a week old or don't write live embrio hatching eggs on the box. The post office is rough when handling packages sometimes and tends to take better care not to shake them to much when that is on the box. I know when I start shipping eggs next year or later this year they will be no more than two days old and packaged upright.
