Arizona Chickens

My lone laying BO is still pumping out an egg a day, though my new layers are only doing every other. I let them free-range my backyard though, and they always find the coolest spots in the grass or on my back patio, so I'm sure that helps.

Does anybody want a 4-week-old SLW roo? I'm trying to find him a home, as well as sell 2 of his sisters, and a BO hen with her 3 RSL female chicks. I need to thin the flock a bit, especially since I just found out that I'm *not* allowed to have chickens where I live.

Gotta keep it under the radar I guess.

I have been wondering about this. Anxious to hear how it works.

PS Did you see the video of the chicken using it?

No. Where's the video?
I worry about the scenario that one chicken is standing on the lever while another is eating out of the side. 1st chicken steps off...

That could be a problem. Hmmm. I guess you need to make sure it closes SLOWLY so they can move. Here's the link to the video...scroll down the page to find it:

We just wrapped our whole coop in bird netting and once the birds couldn't get to the food, they moved on. They are just not even here anymore. We can now leave the gate open when we free range the chickens and don't have to worry about the tweety birds.
I would have the same fear about the chicken stepping away and another getting walloped on the head, especially my Polish girls and the young ones.

We have birds trying to feast on the chickens feed and treats but our one EE pullet makes it her duty to chase them away any time they show up. She will take off running from the other side of the run to send them on their way. She is not about to share any of her goodies. The other three ladies could care less and would let the birds have what ever they want.

Some of my eggs are starting to crack. So far I have 2 EE:s and 1 SLW thy have started their escape. I'm still a bit bummed my silkie egg was no good. Hopefully the ones we have been collecting will be hatchable. I'm hoping to get a nice looking buff pullet. I really love the variety in the Silkies.

My gorgeous Wheaten Am. rooster has to go. The stupid thing has turned mean. It's probably because of the stupid broody hen. I wish I had a laying WA hen to hatch an egg from him, but I don't. So he will be soup. Darn, darn, darn!
I will be butchering roosters this weekend.

He came at me the other day so I stomped on him and he ran away. But, today, he went after my daughter. Our dog intervened just in time, and was given full permission to kill the stupid rooster, but he didn't. So I will have to do it. It really scared her. Poor kiddo!

You know, we finally had a great rooster after getting rid of several awful ones. The stupid coyotes ate him. I love to hear a rooster crow, but maybe it just isn't worth it.

It is just too darn hot to be dealing with chicken problems! Stupid chickens.

ETA: did I mention that some of the pullets are doing a sort of honking sneeze? That can't be good...

Miracle of miracles... we got 8 eggs today. Usually we only get 3 or 4. A couple of them were beautiful blue and had a little blood on them so my New Years pullets are laying.

gckidd... so sad your W. Am has turned mean. I've never had any of my Am roos turn mean.

Noskiveez: I could meet you half way tomorrow of if your husband wanted to bring the little ones to Tempe, I could go there...

Day off tomorrow, it's our 23rd Anniversary.

I sent you a PM... I'm working tomorrow from 6:15AM to 4PM... I'll have a break somewhere in between, but, I suppose I could send one of my boys to meet your husband.

I hope I don't loose more chicks today.. it's 112 out there.

Gckidd - Does your broody need babies? Tried to pm you, but your box is full. Jjust letter me know. My hubby has a class in phx and is going to drop babies off at Mahonri's house tomorrow. If you want I can leave your babies with him. Its much closer than my house. I'm sorry to hear about your roo
I have one that is quite aggressive too. Our kids can't go near him. Hope he didn't scare your daughter too badly.

Good morning everyone!

My dumb modem has been acting up and not letting me on the internet. I should be getting a new one sent to me any day now.

I had lots of catching up to do on here. Sounds like most are doing ok, Mahonri glad to hear you are feeling better. Sorry of rhtose of you that have lost chicken.

Update on my GLW broody. She is just the BEST momma ever and taking great care of the chicks. The other night when it started to get dark all of the hens hoped up to there roosting pole for the night and my GLW hoped right up there too. She sat there looking at the ground where her 3 chicks are clucking her head off. There roosting poles are about 3 feet off of the ground so the chicks can't fly up there yet. My hubby and I sat there watching to see what she was going to do. After about a minute of her clucking, looking, and walking across the pole she jumped down. She stood there clucked a few more times until she chicks all got around her then she walked them into the dog kennel that they have set up for them. It was like she wanted to see if they could roost yet or not and was trying to teach them. The next day I added another pole just about 6 inches off of the ground just to see if they would try to use it. Threw out the day I kept walking over to see if they were going to try to use it or not. Finaly around noon I saw my GLW jump up there and get all settled then the 3 chicks jumped up there next to her. They sat there for a while to take a little nap then Sunshine jumped down. Her chicks followed her. That night she took them into the doog kennel to sleep, but everyday she hops up on that pole just for a while with them.

It is just cute to watch.

I gave away all of my ducklings that came from my two swedish except one. I was hoping that she was going to be a female. Well, last week this little duckling started to make a little weird honk with her chirping.

Great sign that she is a girl!

My two muscovy ducklings are still inside. I am going to have to keep them in here for probably another two weeks at least. I love these little things but yuck.

Brooding 7 chicks inside was way better then 2 ducks. I clean out there brooder fully 2 times a day expecially since it is under my dinning room table.

This heat is just crazy...nothing like phoenix, but 95 is still hard on all of my plants. I grew up in Phx so I know everyones pain there. Our water bill jumped like crazy after this month.
