Arizona Chickens

Thank you all for the great input on the egg! @City farm it was definitely a fresh egg (I found it in the nest box), so I wonder if it might have been a beak or claw like you had said. @MagicChicken That is interesting to know the egg color gets lighter as the season goes on. I suppose they only have so much dye in there. The birds laying the eggs are a couple months over a year so I wonder if they are getting ready to molt. The young from back in April have been going through another so it would make sense.

I am SO ready for the monsoon to be over we have been getting afternoon microburst storms just about daily. Here is the damage from yesterday's storm.....

They were curious when i went out. . Came & hung around me..
Their dad is a bielefelder, mom E.E. can't wait for their beautiful egg's. .
We got so much rain here last night. .that was a crazy storm
They are such cool birds, I'm glad they got good homes with you and your neighbor. The two I kept seemed lonely, the six clone girls always hung out together. But my flock is a more manageable size for me.

Yikes! That's a lot of work that needs to be done over. These storms can be so intense, even though of short duration.

So, I have 30+ chickens that hatched this spring. All but two have been roosting on the perches for months. The other two keep roosting on the ground in a corner of the coop. Every evening I hear a lot of flapping and scraping against the wall after everyone else has gone to roost. When I go in to check, these two birds are desperately trying - and failing - to get onto the roost.

Why are they failing?

(wait for it...)

They are facing into the corner and trying to fly up the wall onto the perch. Which is behind them.

My chickens are "Special."

I had a 1 1/2 year old red sex link girl that was failing like that. I processed her last night and she had a huge fluid filled sack in her abdomen! No wonder she was having a hard time. I'm sure your young ones will get the hang of it soon. They may need something to jump up on before they try for the higher roosting perch.

They are black javas from my Urch line of javas. Most of my javas are smart and independent. These two, not so much. The two "special" birds are very small for their age and they are extremely timid. The ironic part is that their mother is the largest, smartest, most independent and fearless hen I have. These two didn't get any of her good traits, except for the dark eyes and bright yellow soles that are missing in most of the other birds in my flock. Sigh. I don't care that they've got great color. They are too stupid to breed.

Your welcome, hope you are able to drive this way whenwe do the BYC seed box exchange.. I'll post up the date & time..

I haven't watched television in a few week's.. Last night I wanted to see the stories on the storm.. Wow... The video footage what spectacular .. That was the night I was at @Sill
I remember calling her over when we were loading up the bird's... The clouds were weird looking..
I got home just in time to unload the girl's.. The set of 3 for a neighbor was on the carport patio.. They were covered in water by the time she came and picked them up.. The news footage showed the water being dumed from the sky so fast that the rain was traveling horizontal .. That was us, horizontal rain.. Never had a storm like that before.. Our duck's were having the time of their lives playing in the mud..
