thank you, I figure I might of been part of the umbilical part. I think that chick might have tried to follow the mom and got stepped on by one of the other chickens.![]()
I'm so sorry that happened to you.

Well, so far it seems to be working. Opened up the nursery pen this morning, and moved the eggs back to broody #1's favorite box. She wandered over to inspect the premises, then climbed in and commenced setting. Pics in 3 weeks!
I left the nursery pen open and put another clutch of eggs in one of the nesting boxes, still waiting to see if I have any takers.
Spectacular but simple photo with the chickens bendaged foot above the childs feet. Couldn't have been better if you had planned it ?

Probably not your fault. Something was wrong with the chick. My broody-raised chicks used to get tumbled across the coop/run when they accidentally got in the way of a hen scratching for treats. I was horrified the first time I saw it happen. But the chicks took it in stride and quickly learned to stay out of the way of those big scratching feet. The hens weren't doing it on purpose. They just didn't see the chicks behind them. Once I realized everyone would survive those incidents and it was a learning experience for the chicks I relaxed. It was pretty funny to watch. Chicks are smart. They didn't let it happen often.
Edited to add I messed up the nested quote clean-up. I was responding to moms3cuties post.

Spotlights and a shotgun?Hey Guys! So I saw a coyote in the neighborhood this morning... And we live pretty inside of our subdivision. My coop is not coyote proof (I know I know). Any suggestions for a quick fix for tonight so I don't pace the way for a chicken buffet??
