Arizona Chickens

@DesertChic I got this one as a 10 inch sprout (from EcoGrow) about 3 months ago. It is about 4 feet tall already.

Wow! I think I'll take you up on that seed offer when I come out to claim my turkey.

I just went to EcoGrow for the first time last weekend. Now.....it looks like I'll be building a greenhouse and starting an aquaponics venture. Pretty soon the only reason I'll be going to the grocery store will be for paper products, bacon, and cheese.

I gave my hen oregano oil when she was sick, it's a nice natural antibiotic that even has been proven effective against bumble foot too, according to a study I read :)

We take oregano oil during the cold/flu season on a regular basis. It does wonders to shorten an illness and strengthen the immune system....and every time you burp you taste "pizza".

I feel the same way. In fact, I wish I had gotten my son into 4-H when he was younger. I think it would've been really good for him, but, alas....I didn't even know what 4-H was until my son was about 9 years old. My husband would occasionally mention his own 4-H experiences in his youth, but I'd never even heard of it when growing up, and based on my husband's stories for the longest time I thought it had something to do exclusively with horses. I know...naive and ignorant. I guess that's the cost of having grown up in a non-farming community out east.
The 4-H kids do so much! In the past I've helped judge their dogs shows, and they do conformation, obedience and agility all in the same show! What a great group of youngsters.

Hello,
I am new to the forum and am looking to get some ducks. Are there any duck breeders in Arizona or Phoenix area? Thanks for any help.

What kind of ducks? I have muscovies, but still waiting for my first eggs from them.

I may know of a man that has some that he lets people dig out after the irrigation comes from time to time but that's in North West Mesa. I still have some orange cana's that I need to share with some people versus throwing them into the trash. P.m. me if you're interested.

@Sill and @City farm
Between the visit from Sill to help me put to sleep then put down my mascot and our favorite white leghorn named Chickle's 's yesterday and the phone call to and from city farm, I realized I've met some of the best people around on BYC, just to name a few of many!!!

Sill gave me a unique gift that smells kind of like a sweet lemon zest and looks like the texture of the lemon but almost reminds me of fruit that could be potential he called a yellow jellyfish, I can't remember the name of it to save my skin, and there's a problem with me trying to post a picture at the moment so... I'll send you guys a picture later when I can do it from my iPhone!
It was Budda's hand citron. They smell amazing!

This year I made marmalade from them and some of my kumquats with the help of a canning book gifted to me by @cyborg . It came out pretty good for my first canning project.

Does anyone on here have experience with Moringa trees? I'm thinking of getting a few but don't know how well they do in our area, and whether they required a lot of upkeep or not.
I have seeds if you want to try them. I think there is also still some seeds in the seed box? They are so easy to sprout, almost 100% germination rate on the seeds. The trees don't like the cold and I cut mine back every year in the fall to just the first couple of feet of trunk and by the end of the next season they are 20+ feet tall! Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds love the flowers and all parts of the tree are edible. These trees absolutely love the heat and do best in poor dry soil. Yeah perfect for here!

Here's my biggest moringa just sprouting in spring after it's fall chop.

The same tree just a few weeks later. Once it warms up they grow super fast!

Just curious - how do you take it? I've used it topically but not internally. I need all the immune-boosting I can get. Inquiring minds want to know.

You can buy it in gelatin capsules at places like Whole Foods or any decent supplier of vitamin supplements. Another outstanding supplement is Olive Leaf, which is also an exceptionally powerful anti-parasitic (in humans...I don't know if it works in chickens). Four times per year my family takes a daily dose of Olive Leaf in capsule form for one full week to cleanse our system. The only side effect is that you'll probably poop a lot more during that week.

I've had to learn a lot about boosting my immunity as I've got a naturally weak immune system and A LOT of inflammation. These are two of my favorite supplements for combating all those nasty bugs we're exposed to every year.

And to fight inflammation, you can take a daily Turmeric tablet and/or do the following Apple Cider Vinegar treatment:
Add to 8 ounces of water:
  • 2 tsp raw Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother)
  • 2 tsp raw honey
  • Consume this 3 times per day + Take one Kelp tablet daily.

My husband and I just started this ACV treatment and after three days I was able to stop taking my ulcer medication. It's supposed to take 2 months before you feel the results, but the second person who referred us to this program said he experienced significant relief from inflammation and arthritis after just one month.

WOW!!!!! Are you trees planted directly in the ground?

Thanks for the seed offer, but I think I'm getting some from @desertmarcy when I pick up my turkey from her. I definitely need some of these trees around my property. What an outstanding extra source of forage for the chickens! And us!

BROODY UPDATE
When I went out to check on the ladies this morning, I found 2 dead chicks outside the nesting box. When I lifted the hen out of the box to count remaining eggs, I found 2 live little fuzzballs, and 4 unhatched eggs. 3 of those are Marans eggs, and I don't have a good feeling about them, because she has been paying much less attention to them compared to the blue eggs. Wait and see. Anyway, here is the momma and her babies.....

There's not much bedding in that nesting box. I wonder if that could've contributed to the death of the two chicks.

But congratulations on your two little survivors!
