Arizona Chickens

There's not much bedding in that nesting box. I wonder if that could've contributed to the death of the two chicks. :(

But congratulations on your two little survivors! :)

Whenever I put more in there, she just kicks it out. The two dead chicks were outside the box, and one had obviously been pecked, no marks on the other one. No one else is in that pen, so obviously, momma did it, for whatever reason. This is her first brood, but she seems to be catching on.
Of the 2 survivors, looks like 1 black Ameraucana, and 1 blue. Actually, I wasn't expecting any chicks until tomorrow.

Just curious - how do you take it? I've used it topically but not internally. I need all the immune-boosting I can get. Inquiring minds want to know.

@MagicChicken I first learned of oregano oil from members of this group last year when I had a persistent dry cough that had gone on for 2 weeks. I was thinking it was valley fever, but never knew for sure. I did a lot of reading about oregano oil on reviews on Amazon. Apparently the best is from the plants grow in the Mediterranean. I read over 200 reviews on the product I bought. It is from North American Herb and Spice Co, Oreganol P73. I put 2 drops in a small glass of water and drank it 2-3 X a day. Within 2 days, the cough was gone! It came back, but not as much, and I continued to take it and within the next week or so it disappeared altogether. I was impressed! However it did not work on my chickens that had some sort of respiratory illness. I also tried TeliaOils Oil of Oregano, also from Amazon. This product is shipped directly from Greece and is extremely potent, much harder to take than the other brand. It must be diluted more. It is much less expensive. The Oreganol P73 was around $42 for 1 oz whereas the other was about $19 for 1 oz. You have to be careful with these oils. They will burn. But I will always keep it in my medicine cabinet now. So many testimonials from people who say it will kick a cold or flu in the butt if you start taking it at first sign of symptoms. I was amazed at how it stopped my dry cough that had been going on for 2 weeks within 2 days.

Wow! Glad you've got some survivors. If she is turning out to be an attentive broody she may have detected a problem with the other chicks and kicked them out. Or tossed out the bodies if they died on their own.

I've got a first-time broody with 12 day old chicks. Five chicks hatched. One I found dead at the edge of the nest box. It hadn't absorbed the yolk sac and didn't look right. I probably would have culled it myself. Another chick had leg problems and was struggling to keep up, so I culled it. She has three healthy puffballs now and is being a good mom. I love watching broodies with the chicks!

Have another hen going broody and have started to collect eggs for her. It seems easier to have them raise chicks than to break them of broodiness!

Edited to clarify - the three chicks are 12 days old.

The eggs I gave to my broody hatched early too. I guess they're just better at this than the incubator?

Well...it finally happened. Two of my White Rocks found their way into my garden and consumed everything except my tomato plant. Granted, I was growing all those greens for the chickens, but come on! Save some for the rest of the flock!

I can't wait to get that darn greenhouse....though my hubby wants to wait until things settle down at our business. Um....no. Patience is not my virtue.

My garden is fenced off too...over 4 ft tall. I guess I need to make it taller. :/

I can picture mine doing the same thing. I had a hen get startled and fly out hitting just the right spot to get out of the run. Luckily I was outside and heard her calling in the alley.
