Arizona Chickens

Good afternoon everyone!

I just got my new moden installed and the internet is up and working again.

Sorry to hear about the pullet lost.

My chickens are taking the heat great so far, a bunch of little troupers. My egg production is the same 6 a day with 6 hens. Even my broody has started laying again. The only think I have noticed is there eggs are getting smaller and lighter in color. My light brown, pink, and green eggs all almost look white now. My ladies will be a year old next month, how time flies!

My three chicks that I put under my broody are all doing good and I am thinking that ALL 3 of them are roos.

A funny story: Every morning my daughter and I put the muscovy ducklings outside so they can swim and forage around the yard for a while. This morning I told my daughter (5 years old) that she could let the ducks out of there kennel then I went to get in the shower. I get out of the shower to see little piles of duck poo down my hall.

I walk into the kitchen and there are more. Then I walk into the dining room where there kennel is and there is three little sleeping scovies in the middle of my floor. I herded them out the back door and there they went into the pond. I asked my daughter why she let them out in the house and she told me that she thought they might like to see the rest of the house.

Thank goodness I have tile everywhere.

There is a section here on BYC that covers info on many cities including Mesa. We have copies of the city ordinances on our computer but we use Apple. If you are a mac user I could send you copies of what we have. (just contact me if you need the info) As for the HOA's..... they all have different restrictions on things in the their own neighborhoods. Some of our restrictions (like on trimming trees) are not city laws but when you buy a house in this HOA area you are agreeing to abide by their rules. Make sure your realtor helps you contact the HOA to get copies of their rules and restrictions. Here is the area on this website that covers what cities allow chickens. Hope this helps!!

Hi all....

Updates galore!!

First, on the mealworm front my honey let the chooks eat all of the beetles...so I guess we'll have to start over sometime later.

Our GLS bantam roo was taken to the Stock Shop earlier today. I wish I could have said 'bye' to the noisy little bugger.

I hope he gets a good home with some nice hens. He was a good boy and took care of ours.

Damien, the bantam MFD pullet is heartbroken & won't stop crying, but hopefully she adjusts soon. My honey picked up 2 more bantam pullets while he was at the Stock Shop. He let me know by saying "you're going to kill me..."

I am waiting for pictures and better descriptions other than "one is really pretty and the other one is white with a couple of black spots."

Are they from anyone on this list?? They are supposedly about a month old.... Just curious!!

Any advice on introducing them? The two new bantams are wilder than our 1 bantam MFD and the GLW & NH. They're also about 6 weeks younger.....They apparently already made it over the wall one time today

Have a good Monday night everyone!

Looks like you got 50% roos and 50% pullets.

Thank you Mohonri. This is GREAT! Which one came out of the large very dark brown egg? I thougth maybe Chip did, but she is the smallest one.

I stand corrected... I didn't know that a LARGE dk brown egg hatched. That means you either have a
BWA X Delaware or a BWA X GC Marans and most likely a pullet. If it's the marans... you are the first one to hatch one of her eggs and she'll be an olive egger.

Good morning!

I finally got the dog kennel up so the turkeys could have their own little coop away from possible contamination. The poor dears went from cantaloupe-sized to watermelon-sized overnight. The brooder had gotten a bit tooo small.

So I put the kennel around the brooder, and the turkeys spent all evening wigging out, chasing each other around, flapping their wings. Happy nerdy turkey fun. Pictures to follow.

Unfortunately, the chickens that had brooded with them were soooooo small in comparison. Even worse- the chicks are almost all boys. I think there are only 2 girls: a cochin pullet (was from an egg marked "spangled OEGB" ) and a Specked Sussex pullet. I am going to have to pull those girls out in the next few weeks, or else the 5+ roos in there are going to make them miserable.

Good morning everyone!

Yep it is going to be hot today!

My muscovies are the funniest things. I let them outside in the morning and by 10 am they are chirping at the back door. I will open the back door and they come waddling back inside. They must like the cooler temps inside.

They just come inside and sit down next to there brooder and take a nap. This morning my biggest one started chirping so I opened the brooder door and he started walking to the back door. So I opened it and there they went. It just cracks me up.
