That would be perfect! Do you know what color they will be?

Finally made it up to Skull Valley. Sure it's nice up here. Anyone from the forum in Prescott or maybe even here in Skull Valley?

I'll be working on getting my coop up and going, but wondering where to get the chicks in Prescott? Looking for a breeder if anyone knows one. Prob making a trip to Tucson @desertmarcy how are your chicks coming along? If I'm able to sneak away for a bit will you have some chicks ready for new homes?

I've been building a huge new turkey house for the last 3 months so haven't had time to hatch chicks. I am hatching and taking orders for turkeys, though.

Oh, these guys wouldn't be worth the plucking process. They're like, Pee Wee bantams. So you'd probably only get a snack size basket out of them XD
I raise quail for eggs and meat. Those bantie boys have way more meat! They are easy to dispatch, then quickly skin them, remove insides and backbone to butterfly the carcass and put them on the grill with your favorite sauces or rubs.

One of my chicks. Her name is Clara.
What a cutie! And not spoiled a bit!

I don't know how far you are from E. Paradise Lane and 32d street but Western Ranchman is just south of the intersection on the west side. I started my first flock back in January and I got my birds there (9 White Leghorns and 16 Barred Rocks). So far all look to be pullets and I haven't lost any due to illness, etc. I know I plan to get all my birds there from now on - great people!
Yes to Western Ranchman, very healthy chicks. The Stock Shop is also good.

Well then if they are sexlinks it is a hen.. From what I heard, not seen, sexlinks cockerel's are white? But @Sill might know? The tail get's longer as well..take side photo's if you can..

I have tried to add new chick's to a current flock at a young age at night, but they don't ever become a flock.. The new chick's form their own flock..
Yes cockerels are usually white or off white depending on the parent stock. Red and Gold sex links are the same. I've had both and they were great hens. Lots of eggs, relatively quiet, friendly too.

None of mine are white, but I did hear that sexlink cockerels are a lot lighter than the pullets. I'll take a side pic and post it.

This is my first flock of chickens so I'll be good! I just gotta make sure my drake doesn't bother them. Drakes are the horniest birds I have ever seen
I ended up eating the drakes after they were trying to mount my chickens. I don't have the space to house them separate from the hens. The Muscovy girls I have get along with the chickens just fine and learned that when the chickens are scratching the dirt they can watch and catch bugs that way since they don't scratch the dirt like chickens do.

Okay. And I know what a Sexlink is I just wasn't sure about the one that's already getting its wattle. Haha

You eat your chickens?... I could never do that

I eat all of my extra cockerels, and any hens that prove to be egg eaters, excessive feather pickers, or have just passed their laying prime without winning my heart to the point of being deemed "pets". When I first wanted chickens it was all about the eggs but my concerns over the quality of our mechanized food in this country finally helped me decide to eat our own poultry as well. I've no regrets. Learning to cull them was challenging to say the least, but the flavor and quality of homegrown chickens simply can't be beat.

My next endeavor = caponizing.

Home Depot has free plans for
That type of coop is better for back east with their super cold winters. It can become an oven when it's over 100 degrees! It would need to be placed in deep shade in summer or use a swamp cooler for it. Ventilation to get rid of excess heat is key for here, and if you can get a coop with at least one open side your hens will be more comfortable in the heat. Something like these is better for here.

Yeah culling can be hard but home grown meat is the best! You can't beat the flavor! We can't keep excess birds that are not producing and since getting eggs was the main reason to keep them once they are past their laying prime they become dinner. I raised most of our current hens from our former layers, just got a rooster for fertilization and re-homed him to my sister's place afterward. He was a big Bielfelder roo so we got some large hens that lay large to jumbo eggs plus some cockerels that were great for more than a few dinners!

I am doing a coop based on the raised aisle in the picture but the side upper aisle will be hardware cloth. Back wall needs white trim. I have a month to get other three walls done. 12'X 12'
