Arizona Chickens

We have clouds and humidity plus heat! What's up with that. Clouds look a little like thunder bumpers mixed high cirrus type clouds. Covers the sun! I'm located near Casa Grande - I haven't noticed anything on the weather. We are okay so far. I have one broody in the cage - hate that in the heat - she gets cold packs! And I have an old girl (a leghorn whose 4) who has stopped laying and if she makes it through the summer I'll be surprised. She does not want to stay in the house where its cooler - and it messes up the pecking order in nothing flat so I just keep trying to keep her cool. Push a little food, some electrolyte water and let it go. She even moves like a little old lady. Oh well - such is life in the chicken yard. Stay safe and cool everyone.

Strange, isn't it? Usually we don't have humidity when it's this hot. I actually got a sprinkle of rain last night (southwest of Tucson). Not enough to cool anything down. Just a few drops. But it sure was weird.

And my flock once again suffers a loss....

Pullito, my first ever chicken, passed away what I can only guess was less than an hour ago.

She had either suffocated, or broken her neck...

I figured using a common construction block with the holes facing out like a tunnel was harmless, I put the birds waterer on top and it keeps the worst of the dirt out of their water, and the chickens likes to rest their heads inside the "tunnels" of the block to cool off.

Well apperently my poor Pullito got stuck BEHIND the block with her head in one of the the "tunnesl" and couldn't get out. Her head was purple, although there was no other visual trauma besides a little bit of blood from the side of her beak (as if from inside). Her neck was completely limp and jelly-like while the rest of her body had stiffened already.

I have immediately removed the brick and replaced it with solid paver caps. I seriously cant even fathom not having my Big Mamma in the coop............ I have to wait for my dad to get home to help me bury her, so Im just cradling my poor baby in my arms....

Just brought my big Delaware in. She was hiding off in a corner and really listless. Seems to be bouncing back now in the cool house with some water and quiet. She's going to raise hell in the morning though until I come let her out.

So sorry for the loss of your firstie Pullito. Its never fun when they die however they die. AND I had our old woman leghorn in the cool of the house and she gave me whatever the whole time until she could get back out to the coop. Crazy girl - old, skinny and hot - what's not to like! Hang in there peeps - we ain't out of the woods yet.

I'm so sorry .... It's always hard to lose a friend.... I hope she has a nice resting place.

When I went out to dig a grve for Pullito, I found a drowned out nest of day old quail... their momma had nested in a pipe, and someone had drained their pool, flooding the nest and killing all but one baby.

Ive got her i a brooder right now, but if im not holding her or shes not sleeping, she makes sad lonely noses that make my heart hurt...

Does anyone know where I could find a friend for her?

Looking for maybeb bobwhite or button quail.

she is just so lonely and is always crying, my heart physically hurts for the poor thing...
