Arizona Chickens

@BlueBaby it could be that it hurts her, (punky) she is molting too, he over mated her this spring I think and freaked her out, then my hen (goldie) who's lowest peck order noticed her weakness and challenged her and now bullies her bc she's(goldie) bullied by everyone else.. I don't know...

tonight I was bending over the feed and she got scared of Roo and screaming jumped on my back I had the hardest time getting her off safely

@meetthebubus I think that you should either keep her in a separate cage or something so that she can have a break to grow back her feathers. If your other hens are also molting the rooster may go after them more though, with the one in the cage being out of his reach. If you don't really need to have the fertile eggs this time of year, you could always just put the rooster in that separate cage instead. Those hen's really need to be able to grow back the new feathers, without having to be harassed by the rooster. This is just my suggestion. They are your chickens to do with as you wish.

Chicken therapy?.. anyone experience this?

My top hen has become rooster shy just runs around screaming or stays in the nesting box so he won't come near her, he's not mean to them, she's losing weight bc she hardly eats I've made a playpen for her where they hang out so she can bathe, eat and scratch while knowing roo can't get to her, she's slowly getting better, but I don't know if she'll ever go back to just hanging out normally
Seems like I have to hand feed her to keep her alive maybe it's extended broodiness? Her appetite is fine.... we'll see how it goes...

I agree with the others here regarding the molting behavior....but is she's NOT molting then I would examine her sides under her wings for injuries from mating. Some of my girls have been badly sliced by rooster spurs, but hide the injuries under their wing tips. Either way, giving her a "rooster-free" area sounds much needed and much appreciated.

@DesertChic yeah for sure the playpen as I call it is working so far day one she was scared he could get to her, day 2 she figured out she was safer so she dust bathed day 3 and four she on top of the roof looking around but still a bit nervous if I put her in the playpen she stands, if I leave her out she stays in the nesting box which is worse so I think it's working so far

One thing is roo is also regrowing so he doesn't mate with them right now I have very sparse layers right now one or no eggs a day

One ironic thing is by her running and screaming it brings attention to her and he runs after her thinking she needs help, not viscously so that scares her more lol

Also the play pen is a fence in a half circle attached to the enclosure for inside so she interacts while being safe and I take her out at night or if I'll be gone in case anyone was wondering what I meant by playpen,

Sad news... I talked to the lady that has the Aloha NN's, and showed her the pics of the 2 NN's I got a hold of. The lady said that the coloring of these 2 plus the mixture that they are will not work in breeding to the one's that she has. I think I had better listen to her, because I do want to do the Aloha colored ones. So, I will sell these 2 off, if anyone want's them.

These are the 2 that are now up for sale for $10.00 each. They are both 8 months old. One is supposed to be a NN/Americauna mix (a blue egg gene), and the other one a NN/EE mix.

My splash NN, Monroe, finally cooperated with my efforts to photograph him, so I thought I'd share some with you guys. He's one of the sweetest, most affectionate of my boys and demands hugs throughout the day. When I feed the boys in the morning he gulps down two mouthfuls of food and then runs to me to be picked up and snuggled. I LOVE his coloring and personality and plan to keep him around as long as possible for those reasons alone for my egg laying line. He's also a carrier of the blue egg gene from his EE mother.
