Arizona Chickens

Does anyone else hate the Sanderson Farms commercials they're showing right now? I don't know why, but it really ticks me off!
All the chickens production companies are "anti-biotic free" now. Because the Feds changed the rules and you need a vet prescription, they will be using anti-biotics while we will not be able to get any.

Very true. I also don't like that they show a few chickens in a nasty yard and then all theirs locked in big houses with these pristine grounds all around.

Yes, those things are a concern, but having my own well I look at as a good thing. I am from CA and they started rationing water last year. It's a lot harder to ration water from your private well! I did not like the thought of killing my trees to save water for the golf courses and Big AG guys.
Parront, do you have hard water in your area?

Prescott water is great. You have to look at the rural well report to know other areas. Some have arsenic, some the aquifer is too deep. Well water in the Ca desert where I came from was quite hard. Chino Valley and Paulden are on a nice aquifer, and where I am trying to find something suitable.

I've never heard of Sanderson Farms and never seen any of the commercials down here in Tucscon. Who are they and where are they from?

I envy you that water. Our water is positively crunchy and our water company performs lab tests 2-4 times per year to check arsenic levels because of the mines right behind my house. Our goal for this next year is to make a major investment in rainwater harvesting. I've begun to increase the size of my garden and to also plant more trees, and they don't do well on our super hard well water. Plus, the ph of our water is around 8.5....just like our soil....and most plants prefer at least a more neutral environment to grow in. We have a water softener in place just to try to save the pipes and hot water heater from needing full replacement every other year, and I filter all of our drinking water. :hmm

One of the best things about Prescott is the water! But, the city is sucking Big Chino Wash dry. Too much development! The older neighborhoods in Chino Valley are all on great wells, but some outlying areas have wells that are drying up, from the developers using the water for new tract housing. The city of Chino Valley has very chicken-friendly zoning, which makes it one of my top choices on a new AZ chicken ranch!

OK so I looked up this commercial here it is below, I agree they are selling lies, what does a horse or a teenager putting up a fence got to do with good chicken? Also they make fun of those who want more care for their chickens with that quote on the old barn...
