HI ALL MY DEAR AZ homies & chicken lovers, this is very kool idea & i am going to turn all my nest boxes into this kind of nest boxes that helps to keep the eggs from getting broken and or eaten, so doing it this way, i must say its a low cost pretty easy fix, check out this video below , its one of the best ideas i have ever seen..!its great Roll away nest boxes -

When we plant trees, we dig down at least 3 feet and dig outward at least 4 feet. Then I backfill with a combination of cow manure and compost. Once the tree is established I add new compost two to three times per year. The only problem I'm having right now is that we planted trees in the chicken yard, and every time I add compost the chickens scratch it all up and pick through it.

Can you run some temporary chicken wire around the trees?

Awesome idea I like this set up. The nest box drama has died down in my coop since removing the boxes. They created two separate nests on their own and have not been fighting. Some even go in there and lay their eggs together but I love this idea for egg eaters! So far mine show little interest in their egg, other than sitting on them for a little while.

HA , so glad to hear your girls are getting along better

I know I'm late coming into the cold question and you got good advice, you have to do due diligence as a new chicken owner study up on them, this may sound harsh but these gals will be good to you if you are good to them, even feathered when they are young they are not feathered like adult chickens, mine have a ton and they are a bit cold in the mornings now. In the summer they need protection too or all the work will be gone if they are sick I know they can be stinky in the brooder, but soon you'll also get tired of all the care without eggs 4 months can be long when they eat a ton

If you toss them out they will most likely fall victim to predators, weather or just being too young and curious chickens are curious creatures... study up there is a ton of info all over this site that can give you ideas on what works for you

I just let my chickens out and fed them. When I opened the door the wild bird population made a huge wave as they left
I stayed out there until the chickens were done eating. This is ridiculous.

I'm not sure if you are in a suburb, I know the winter birds are bad out here too, my 360 has fence holes big enough for those little winter birds so they come in too, but since I've been throwing last night's chicken feed leftovers outside of the cage they hardly come in now they rather be in the open space, they feel safer than trying to get in and out of the fence... so if you have space maybe doing a birdseed block somewhere else will entice them away from the chickens?

@meetthebubus I was thinking something like that might help. I can try one in the front yard. It's mostly doves and my neighbors feed birds in their backyard but they still come to my place.

Ya, I try my hardest to only feed as much as they'll have all eaten before they go to bed, but the wild birds know that where there's other birds, there's got to be food, so they come in looking anyway. It's frustrating. And my birds don't like them either, whenever they see them flying over they give that growl sound. Tossing out food somewhere might be a very good idea.. I may try that too.

Any AZ chicken people out there? I am looking for some advice on raising chicks in the desert. I'm in Mesa. Does it get too hot out here? I have four 20 day old chicks, 3 Buff Orps and 1 leghorn. Do we need to do anything special here
