i highly agree...!!! but yes thats right chickens are smart so true, even as small chicks just weeks old they notice strangers, we had 18 aussie chicks in a brooder and our farm hand came in to see them & stood a few feet away just quietly standing there looking at them , but when they saw him the entire group of chicks freaked out and crying out with fear & ran all over trying to get away gosh, it was just amazing to see they had the realization & were so smart to run for their lives, no one would ever think they would notice he was a stranger and run for their lives...??? yes chickens are very smart, its we who are the dumb ones not to understand that these birds know things & do learn , i taught my flock to run when i say run in the morning ,HA its a hoot to see them all running as fast as they can go ...lol.. even the old fats hens go really fast as they can run waddling away to keep up with the others ...lol... i cant help it they are all so cute when they waddle run so fast like that , some even take off flying....lol... i say chickens are more fun then anything....lol.... i still call them all my little babies, like when they were tiny ,& they like being called that ,this one time, when my new chicks were all just days old i saw amazing things going on with these tiny chicks, you would not think that tiny cockerels would have the sense to try and help a sick chick that had pasty butt and became the smallest chick in a weeks time,as i would watch over her, after putting her back in with her mates after i was keeping her with me every night and applying a bit of extra heat which saved her life in the long run &that healed the chill that caused her pasty butt , i would put her back in to sleep with her mates , but this one night i put her back in with her hatch mates & i noticed the 2 little roos i had ordered along with all the pullets, i saw they noticed she was acting sickly and the 2 little roos each took notice of her condition and they laid down on either side of her to keep her warm and they seemed to actually be taking care of her , and did try to get her to eat as well when she woke up, they would spend time with her trying to care for her in between the time i would take her with me, but she did fine after a wile , she was almost close to death but recovered well , so golly who would think the days old tiny roos would notice she was not well, so after she was cured she was the tiny girl that hung with the 2 big boys , and the 3 of them were always together, it was the sweetest thing Ive ever seen, its so amazing that even very young roos watched over a sticky hatch mate & did understand from birth on,that they needed to step in and try to help this sick chick get better , i have a pics of the 3 of them playing with their color full new toy i gave them to play with a cheerios box i gave them i knew they would love all the colors and she is the one that was jumping for joy in the back round, so yeah chickens are smart that's for sure , but sad its us who cant tell they are because we dont understand their world...!! but strangely we think they should be understanding our world..?? the pics show the size difference of the tiny girl and the 2 with her are the 2 young roos, checking things out to protect all the girls in their care hanging back behind them afraid of the new toy that arrived in their brooder , but with my encouragement after a few minutes they all loved it, all the bright colors were just so exciting ...!!!
HA the top pic is a fire works poster & the 3 chicks together as the investigation team.. i added in a pic here of those 2 roos when they got older, they are still together & live together very well , i still have them both very sweet guys, the white one is a Colombian wyandott his name is Fred Mertz & the other roo is a Sliver laced wyandott, his name is Silvester.
Those pictures are adorable, I love looking over my old pictures when the girls were chicks. And you are correct, there is nothing funnier than when chickens attempt to run full speed!
I was going the external route because I need every square inch of floor space inside the coop, and the boxes would be blocked off with a large strip or cardboard because a dark box would look tempting for a place to sleep.
