Arizona Chickens

@BlueBaby. Here's a pic of the blue girls. If you look closely the lighter girl has a few dark flecks. I found a rubber egg on the poop board where the darker girl was roosting last night so they may both be layers now.
EDIT: Actually I think it was one of the NNs rather than these girls based on where I found it.

The lighter girl is possibly the prettiest chicken I've ever seen. Looks like acid wash denim. @BlueBaby is that light color common in your breeding? Both of those blues are very nice looking.

I would put the nest boxes high enough so the chickens can walk under, but lower than the roosts. That way they won't be tempted to sleep in the nest boxes. They usually squabble over the higher perches.
Yes, that is the plan. They will also be blocked off and slanted on top to keep them from perching there.

My issue now is that they freak out every time the garage door opens. I may have to throw a blanket over the brooder when I break out the power tools because it's gonna get noisy. At least they won't see ME making all the noise.

@SonoranChick for color, this is a better pic of the light blue girl.

The color of blue that turns up in the chick's can be in different shadings of the blue, depending on who the parents were. I am running a blue rooster over 2 black hens, 2 blue hens, and 1 splash hen. My guess is that the mother to that lighter blue chick that she has is from out of my splash hen that died this past summer. The splash hen that I have over here now is one of her daughters. What @igorsMistress has there in that light blue one looks to be a Blue Splash as for coloring.

That makes sense, the blue roo over a splash hen. Was that the hen who went broody in the nest box and got too hot? Poor gal. I'm so glad you were able to breed her before she passed.

Yes, that was Precious. I named her splash daughter after her, since the name was open again, and she looks just like her mother did.

I did that. Trust me...there will always be at least one chicken that will want to sleep in the nesting box. They're stubborn that way. (Just like you'll have a dozen nesting boxes, but all of the hens will want to lay their egg in the same box at the same time, as if the other boxes don't exist. Silly chickens!)
