Arizona Chickens

I have 22+ acres and their house is about 500' away from mine. Their house was built before the property was surveyed. After the survey, it ended up being 25' from the property line, the mininium set back. They had a problem with the person I bought the property from, about having to move their driveway, because it wasn't on their property. The first thing I did was to fence the lines, so there would be no questions later on. I offered to sell them a few feet, or do a property exchange, to give them more space. As usual, they wanted it their way, or no way at all. Something for nothing kind of folks. The county came out to look over the situation, ruled that my mules were OK where they were. Turns out the jerks had an illegal dog kennel. The county officials asked me if I would like to have them tear it down. I said we'll see. Just have them leave me alone. Never had another problem with that neighbor. They finally sold and moved to town. I no longer have to spit jelly beans out my butt at them. My new neighbors loves my mules. And the chickens.

I'm still looking for a place like that. Let me know when you find it. We are about as far from the county seat as we can get and they still stick their noses in everybody's business.

Is it 12 everywhere in Glendale? I thought that when I called a few years ago, there was no limit on chickens on my property, except no roos. I gave them my address and they looked it up. I currently have more than 12 chickens.

Our property is 20,000 sf (almost 1/2 an acre). It is zoned for horses, although due to the size we are only allowed 1 horse. Although, the size of our property only allows for one livestock animal (no matter what the size), chickens are not included in 'livestock animals'. Before chickens, we had 2 miniature horses on our property. This broke the rule, but horses are herd animals and we would have felt guilty keeping only one. Our neighbors knew and no one complained - we had them for about 3 years. The neighbors actually liked seeing our daughters walk the horses around the neighborhood.

I bought 10 fertile eggs from a lady in Wickenberg for my broody. They were great eggs - almost all developed, but my dumb clutz of a broody kept accidently breaking them (she never ate the broken eggshells or baby chicks). We got down to day 21 with 2 eggs left and she hadn't broken any in 4 days. Day 21, I found another broken egg with a fully developed dead chick in it (the yolk was not completely absorbed yet).

I didn't have any faith in her at all to hatch the last remaining egg successfully, so I brought it into the house. It hadn't pipped yet, but as I carried it in, it cheeped at me. I don't own an incubator, so I rigged up a little basket with a light bulb hanging over it. I used a meat thermometer to make sure the temperature over the egg stayed around 100 degrees and placed the basket in my bathroom with my room humidifier going.

She was strong and 6 hours later, she came out all on her own (at least I hope it's a girl). I hatched my first baby chick ever!

This is the new chick at 1 week old with its two new buddies that I had to purchase to keep it from getting lonely. It came from a b/b/s egg and I think it's a splash, although its wings are coming out grey, not white.

I have one more broody sitting on eggs due this week. She hasn't broken a single egg and is much more faithful to her nest. I've candled and have at least 6 eggs developing on track. Hopefully, they'll hatch out safely.

"A. Raising and grazing of livestock is permitted for a maximum of one (1) livestock animal per five thousand (5,000) square feet of open space. Two (2) swine shall be allowed per lot. The raising of poultry is permitted provided they are contained within a fence or cage. Male fowl shall not be permitted within five hundred (500) feet of any residence or living space, including pool or patio, on an adjacent suburban residential, urban residential, or multiple residential zoned lot."

This happened years ago~~ After the nosey old lady, with nothing better to do in life but upset others, up the street called the law and told them I was selling drugs out of my yard, the police came and I explained to them that I was selling poultry NOT DRUGS and that I do not keep roosters and that I keep everything clean and contained. The officer(who found it all very amusing) at the time said he did not know if I was allowed to have as many as I have and that he would have an inspector to come out. I was not happy but the inspector guy did come out and said since my property is zoned for livestock, I could keep them as long as they did not receive any complaints from my neighbors. All my neighbors have said they have no issues and most did not even know that I had them until this old bitty decided to report some crap she made up in her own delusional mind.

I guess when little old bittys see cars come and go in a short period of time they create stories in their minds about how you are some sort of criminal. You know its not like I have foot traffic all hours of the day and night with people toting off chickens under their arms sniffing them or something

Mom was right...its takes all kinds to make the world go 'round. I say if you want chickens then get chickens. Most people are too busy with their own pitiful lives that they won't even notice UNLESS YOU HAVE A NOSEY LITTLE OLD BITTY LIVING UP THE STREET!!!!!

Yeh well we do kinda have one of those in my neighborhood he has nothing better to do so he rides up and down the street on his bike all day smoking his pipe. If you ever wanna here info or gossip about the neighbors hes the oone to go too
