Arizona Chickens

My ee pullet looks like a Welsummer except for her pea comb. She doesn't have muffs or beard either

You could be right can you see the waddles on them?

Winds are coming Thursday and especially Friday will give us a break also keep heart for good monsoon weather to give us breaks from the intense heat

Im installing the AC for them

And integrating I think this week wish me luck it'll be my first integration :fl

Oh no!

My girls have been ok, its some of the littlest struggling BC they don't all use what's offered to cool them but they are learning

I'm keeping an eye on them. I don't want to have to pull them from the girls who are mothering them because they're doping a good job, but if I have to I'll put them in a brooder.

So far, my birds are doing just fine. It got to 110 degrees here a couple of days ago. Even the 8 week old chicks handled it great. Outside, no ac, no evap, just sprayed down a section of their runs so they had cool wet spots. No issues so far.

I have a broody who's been on an inaccessible nest since early April. Nothing has hatched yet. I am not about to slither under the deck to check on things. At this point I hope she doesn't hatch any chicks. Yesterday I found a roadrunner coming out of the hoop coop pop door. The roadrunner would love some tasty chicken nuggets, and that is the coop where the chicks would be staying if the broody hen is successful.

The 8 week old chicks were sired by a cockerel who managed to hatch himself out of a broody's nest last June. I figure if he could get himself out of an egg outdoors in June he was a sturdier bird than usual. So far that looks to be true. Even though he has the world's largest comb with a ridiculous number of points (I think it's 11), and he's got some disqualifying color flaws, and I can't stand the high pitch of his crow, he's still a keeper. Plus the hens seem to like him. It will be interesting to see how his chicks grow out. So far they look pretty vigorous. Crossing my fingers that I don't have to eat them all. Looks like more than half are probably boys. :he

Oh no! I'm so sorry. Geez the heat is U.G.L.Y. Was that the one you crossed for the NN? That was such a striking chick. So sorry again.

No, 'her' rooster, Wesley, was the one that sneaked in and mated with one of my NN girls. Wesley was so upset at her passing that he kept laying in the corner of the coop where she always laid her eggs, just looking depressed, and didn't even want to come near me, which is VERY unusual. Today he finally started to snap out of it, but he's even more attentive to his other hens than usual.

Are you sure it was the heat and not something else? This summer has only begun!! So sorry to hear.... :(

I'm 95% sure it was the heat. She was more shy than all of my other birds and often wouldn't go to the cool spots even during the hottest part of the day.

She was a special one. Every morning when I'd open her pen, all of the other birds would run to the food dish, but Celine would circle around my feet until I picked her up for snuggles. Then when I put her back down she would finally go over to the food dish. And at night, when I'd go out to lock up all the pens, she would come running out as soon as she saw the light from my headlamp, begging me to pick her up for more snuggles before I'd put her on the roost. She was just super affectionate.

Yes'm I can see her wattles. They are smallers than those on the other girls by far.

Oh that's so sweet, so sad, I'm glad you shared that

Since losing Mohawks my big bubus have not been the same, its like her affection rubbed off on them

:hugs

Its hard enough to loose your fur babies BUT when you have feather babies who are sweet and snuggly its doubly hard. I really am sorry @DesertChic.:hit
On another topic the littles are really growing - especially the big dark feathered girl. She has this cresty thing going on her head - looks like she's a rocker - I've named her Punky. I am having so much fun with them. :love
