Awesome thank you so much. I just ran to Walmart and bought some and crushed it up and put it on their fav berry. I made sure only my big girls got those special berries! And I bought a mister system for $12 and just put it in their area. I feel bad for the girls. If I wasn’t afraid of the damn coyotes I would let them have free roam of the big backyard.

thanks for the help. I did just buy them some calcium citrate with vit d after reading another article. I will try this and see how it works. I read that others had tried the shells and this works better. So I will keep ya posted!!! She had this one outside the nesting box and unfortunately I don’t know which of my five did it! So all five big girls got the treat with the calcium. And as for talking to the girls I do the same thing and so do my kids!!! I love the way they look at you when you talk to them

I talk to mine all the time! "Go play in the mud", "Make sure you drink enough water", "Don't forget to take toe dips!" I'm lucky the neighbors don't live close enough to hear me haha

NN is an abbreviation for the Naked Neck chickens. They have less feathering than many of the other breed's and seem to be able to handle our desert heat out here better.

@SMorrison7k Way, way cute. I find the ones I let be mamas don't red up again for about 8 weeks'ish. Usually about 2 weeks after they kick the kids out on their own! The heat doesn't help either. No eggs this summer from that girl - she's say "yahooo!!"
@Suzyqchickens I would give them oyster shell. Keep a dish out or more than one dish if you need to but the oyster shell will help the shell. This heat really leaches the calcium out of them. When I feed at night I say to them - now remember your oyster shell - it'll help with the heat tomorrow. People who are feeding with me for the first time just laugh and laugh as I talk to them like kids heading to bed!
Last night one of my younger NN girls (Sister - as in Mo's sister) decided to roost in the tree. (this is one of the 3 we ended up raising that were rejected by a broody)This girl is a beauty too and about 2 weeks younger than the older - more robust NN kids. She has tried this before and been brought back down and put on the roost. So last night I was up on the ladder bringing her down again. Tonight we had a talk about being on the big girl roost and not getting in the tree. She was just too little and the owl would take her away. One of those three is a rooster who is very protective of her and her little sister Bitty. My next door neighbor startled me and said she didn't want to interrupt while I was disciplining my chicken! OOPS sorry about the chapter! Stay cool and safe friends

yep me too! I'm always calling their names to make sure they know who they are

Lately though I'm mama referee snapping fingers at the 2 roosters bc they get feisty at dusk and try to get their job done as many times as possible and all those poor girls Want is to eat and cool off! My rules are no chasing, and no staying on them for longer than needed

I talk to mine all the time. I don’t know what I did before chickens. I tell them they are handsome or beautiful. That I love them. We watch tv together. Now and then one goes to work with me. Trying to find a basket to make a car seat for the car but haven’t been able to find one.
