Arizona Chickens

I get my electrolytes at TSC and I get the bigger container because I give them probiotics and electrolytes when it is really hot - like today. I mix it into the water so everybody gets some. Every other or every two days generally. Advice from an old chicken keeper who made their own and used it during the hot, hot days. Its less than 7 bucks and lasts me a while. I am going to check out Cal Ranch and see if they have those mixes. Today's heat means I should do wet feed tonight with oregano and garlic. Hot here until about Wednesday then not much cooler. I'm expecting 115 degrees easily today. Here we go again folks. Stay safe and cool all.

I hope everyone is doing ok in this heat! My internet connection keeps going in and out :barnie I blame the weather. I have to take a glucose test tomorrow morning and my doctor recommended that I eat something simple beforehand, like an egg. Good thing I have lots of those around here! Thanks chickens!

Yes it is hot, but I'm still going out there every couple of hours to check on the flock, and even watering down a place on the ground for my 3 free-range yard bird roosters. Yes, no coyotes got those one's yet!

Tonight I have to make some Spaghetti for hubby.

I hope they dont get them, sad way to go.

@SonoranChick The heat has been harder here bc of my power loss Monday to Tuesday night all my ice melted so I'll just getting back to having a lot frozen , so giving them ice that lasts is a challenge still..

Also today Callie,a buff, was laying and heat crying with Roo by her side (sweet boy) so I cool bathed her and she loved it for The first minute but recooperated fine and started complaining that she wasn't a duck and wanted out lol

my easter eggers are a bit over 6 months old right now!! got an awesome pic of Pollyanna last night:

Roo looks great ! How are your EEs socially ? I have one that will come for treats and will let me touch her but the others all stay far away. I have one that the only time Im able to get within 20 feet of is when she is roosted for the night.

@meetthebubus I know what you're going through, makes it even harder to keep it cool. During our last round of extreme heat a few weeks ago my ice blocks had exploded, and the new jugs had not frozen in time. So I only had one jug to work with. It was a rough day for them but they made it.
I think I have narrowed it down to four main things that are necessary to survive our summers:
1. Shade
2. Water pools/mud pools
3. Misters or swamp cooler
4. Ice blocks
I know some people don't use misters or swamp cooler but on the days where it is 105* or more, I think it really helps. I also think it's smart to add cold snacks and electrolytes/probiotics if possible. We must have some pretty hardy birds to be able to tough it out in this heat!

@13lue
Thanks, my eggers are super sweet, most jump up and sit for cuddles or will let me pick them up they are not nervous whatsoever and step all over me I have to walk shuffling my feet bc they don't want to move when I come in for treats lol bc there are 19 of them there are a few that will come up to me but dont want to be handled i think its bc there was so many I used to have 8 on my lap at once when they were little and the shyer ones didn't come up and I tried to handle them but they preferred not to be so I just let them :) i think bc i spent soo much time with them at first, plus Marshmellow the roo is calm and will cuddle with me and if the rooster is calm so are his hens

My buff Roo is nervous by nature and tells his girls to be nervous around me, but in the end only Dina listens to him they all let me hold them some desire it,but Dina screams bloody murder If I try to hold her lol

Good list, I agree :thumbsup

today I did something new I froze Greek yogurt in a cup and put it in their dish they went wild for it and bc its yogurt and hot outside it melted as they ate so it wasnt too hardfor them, but still super cold i did this at 4 pm and at 6 pm they were not that hot as usual! So the frozen yogurt really helped them :)
