Arizona Chickens

I've seen chicks go on their back from time to time, but we've never had them die.

There are some who put them in a little Pam lid and dripper them sugar water 'til they are over that.

I think they are still trying to absorb the yolk and then sometimes they will get a drink and when they put their head back to swallow they flip over.

Of course, I had kids around them all the time when they were hatching so no one chick ever stayed on it's back for long.

Got four eggs today, two ams, two marans.

Tucson tofu... I see 4 ams and a Golden Cuckoo Marans... hope it's a pullet, it should lay DARK.
One of the Ams looks like a BW cockerel. We'll have to see how it feathers out.. I'm still waiting to see on that looks as pretty as his daddy.

i like the buff silkies the best... too bad shes not selling any

There's a Lawn Show in Tucson on Saturday; may be some silkies for sale there. I do know a lady who wants to downsize her flock; very nice birds.

so, just in case, who is this lady?

I ordered my gro gel from Meyers when my youngins got sick a few weeks back. I got the 2000 dose packet. Its a powder you mix with water and it has vitamins and hydration. It turns into a bright green jelly and they really like it. A tiny bit of the powder gods a very very long way. It was $20 but they have smaller packs for under $5. I arrainge the rocks so they can only get their beak in. The one time I didn't, one of the FBCM drowned.

Today hubby is separating the coop again for frizzles. Hubby thinks one of our Wyandottes we ordered is a roo. I'm not convinced. There is a Wyandotte out there laying eggs and I think its that one. I want to move them out back but hubby swears its a rooster.

Put it on a cage by itself on your porch for 24 hours. You should either hear a crow or find an egg

Its a rooster. i saw it crow this afternoon. Maybe my buddy will take a breedable pair off my hands. I hate when my husband is right because now he's going to gloat for weeks!

Hi Everyone!

Happiness is sitting at my computer getting ready to work, and I hear my roosters & cockerals crowing. To me, that means all is well in the chicken pen. I even hear a couple of newbies giving it a try.

Have a great day everyone!

Angie

My three have been having a competition crowing since 5:30AM and it's still dark... and then my Golden Retriever mimics them! Serious! I hope my neighbors keep their windows shut.

Of course it's a warm one out there still I think it only got down to 79 in my back yard... could be the last 100 degree day of the year.

I work from 7:30AM 'til 2PM today and then my weekend starts. We'll be going to North Scottsdale and East Mesa looking for a nice, 'used' Honda Pilot.... I refuse to pay for a new one as you loose 5Gs as soon as you drive it off of the lot.

We'll be giving Valbazen to all of the chickens to 'deworm' them and then I'm waiting for the Frontline spray I've ordered to be certain that my chicks are free of mites and lice. I've got to figure out how to keep the doves and pigeons out of my back yard.

Good luck on your car hunting. I refuse to buy a brand new car, too, especially after I read that most millionnaires drive used cars- I figure that counts for something. I recently traded my Buick LeSabre for a used Toyota Rav4. Love it. When asked why I didn't get a new one, I told them that I am on a budget, and my insurance and tags would go way up. This way, my insurance went up $15 per month and my tags went up about $100.00 per year.

My roosters usually start crowing about 4:00 am, that is when my DH and I get up for work, so I'm thinking they see the lights on in the house. Luckily, both of my neighbors grew up on farms with chickens, and they both told me they like the roosters crowing. My goal is to downsize my laying flock to 30 hens and 3 roosters. Now, if they would just stand still so I can figure out which cockerals I want to keep, it would make my job a whole lot easier. Any suggestions on making that happen?

It is nice to have a long weekend. I actually took 3 days off from my full-time job, but am still working a couple of hours in the morning at my part-time job. So, I am done about 11:00 am and the rest of my day is mine. Of course, I carted around my DS and friend yesterday, not sure what is in store today.

Have a great one!

Angie

I am still going to try and sell my two extra Blue Wheaten roos. Their size is good, and their coloration is decent... just not like their daddy which isn't good enough for breeding. Like I was told, "only one in 30 chicks will be show quality"....and that is breeding show quality birds!

The incubator is on Lockdown. I've got 10 DARK eggs from Mahonri and 2 B/BWA eggs also from Mahonri, 2 Olive Eggers and a hand full of Silkie and SLW eggs. I'm hoping this is the best hatch yet. I feel more confident about these eggs than I have in a long time. I've had no issues, consistent temps and humidity.

Bob - Are you still up for some eggs? I've got some eggs laid today, SLW, Phoenix, Silkie, Buff Orpington x Silkie, Frizzle (could bePure breed polish, pure breed Frizzle or a mix of those two). If Bob doesn't want them, they are up for grabs. I will collect until Monday and can bring to Phoenix on Monday.

Bob's Henhouse :

Gallo de cielo, congrats on the win!

Arizona Desert Chick, 3 of the chicks from this hatch wound up on their backs, lost balance flopping around I guess since they are pretty wobbly, and only 1 has survived to this point. 1 had problems with it's legs, so I can kind of understand that. But if they can't flip themselves back over it's like they drown/suffocate. 1 had fluid coming from it's beak.

Oh, no. That's sad.

So, still put in in the cage; just slip an egg in with it when hubby isn't looking
