Arizona Chickens

Quote:
Maybe it can get passed on through the eggs - I have no idea. But, at least with your sister brooding them for you, maybe that can count for the incubation period.

We bought a 6' x 6' (4' high) chainlink dog run (chainlink roof too) on craigslist for our babies to grow up in - should work much better than last time when we tried to integrate our 3 sexlink chicks with the big meanies. We put them in early (with some places they could run to), because we had no extra pen for them.

Yeah, I would think that the brooding time would at least count for some quarantine time as well. Regardless, when we get them in a week or two, we'll probably have them in a kiddie pool with hardware fence around them and in our garage.

The dog run is a great idea! Especially since it has a chain link roof!

I've been checking out Craigslist the past week or so, but haven't found anything that hasn't been claimed already.

"I am having a chicken and egg swap. Basically you will be trading your chickens, chicks, ducks, turkeys or whatever you wish for someone elses poultry. I am still coming up with the actual details. It will be in Marana at my house (Avra Valley area) unless I can find another location in the mean time. No fee to attend. Every thing must be heathly, chicks must be at least a week old. Please be honest about your chickens, etc. Eggs must be wrapped to prevent breakage. You can swap as many eggs as you wish. If you know your eggs are not fertile please do not bring them! As we all know some eggs will not be fertile, eggs must be no older than 3 days old and stored properly, so everyone can go home and put the eggs in their incubators, but just be honest. I know it will be a blast!! Please be honest, I know you wouldn't want to get something that was unhealthy. Can't wait to hear from you. You can also bring some to sell. Must have your own cages, boxes, etc. Please email me with your name and number and I will call you to get all the details of the chickens, chicks, ducks, turkey's or whatever poultry you will be swapping. You may also want to bring some egg cartons just in case there is some eggs that you don't want to pass up. June 28th @ 9:00 - 11:00 am. Thank you... Peak Poultry formely Arizona Silkies.. I plan on doing this every month from hear on out. I hope it turns out good.. Please R.S.V.P by June 14th. "

HaHa I was giving advice to someone about Arizona chickens so I opened another tab and posted a link to this thread. After I posted it on the other thread somehow I flipped over to the beginning of this thread and posted a comment on it only to realize that I was commenting on something from page one of this thread. I think I am been on BYC too long this evening.

I'm in mesa for now but put a offer ona house in Apache Junction..
I tried misters once and they kept getting clogged or started to rot the wood and it would make the coop extra smelly. It also seemed to get a little hotter in there but I just don't know what to do? Does anyone know the city restrictions in Apache Juntion for housing chickens? I was just going to say that its a hobby like some one raising parakeets, cockatiels, doves, etc? Is that wrong? could I get away with that?

I just started using misters for my rabbits. They work great, but yes, you get some drips and puddles. I would suggest pointing them "outward" around the coop or run to reduce problems with mold etc. Haven't had a clog yet, but I'm sure our hard desert water will do its thing at some point.

Anyone else use misters with chickens?

Good morning all from Tonopah, I am getting ready to put my misters up, However I will hang them from the wire fence around the front side of my run, I will point them out, I hope that it will work, I had that set up front of my patio and it made a difference there. I will install when it gets over 105. So far I just hose down the area 2x a day and at the same time the grass patch gets watered.

Patches Lil Roo, What is Widdle chicken sox?

Thanks for the vinegar idea - I was thinking along those lines, glad to hear it works! Do you dilute or use full-strength?

Widdle (little) chicken socks = me trying to be cutesie. Brahmas have partially feathered legs, and her photo showed, well, widdle chicken socks! (Message #912, page 92 of this thread.)

The small hutches on Craigs List under farm and garden or chickens, The lady sells them for $50.00. I have 2 of them and am planning on two more. they hold 3 to 4 chickens, are super easy to clean, easy to put together. You have to supply your own nest boxes. For the winter I cut out a front panel from old voting signs, they are weather proof and easy to cut and screw into, also added a door in front where a small drop down door openat air flow. If the wind blows hard I just close the door. Hope that you take a look at them, solved my coop problem.
