Arizona Chickens

@igorsMistress I'm just doing other thing's now since I have temporarily shut off my incubator. I have some of those big spaghetti sauce jar's that look like the mason jar's. I washed them out and dried them. Now they have been re-purposed to hold my feed mixture that I use for my wet feed. All I will have to do is to dump one in a bowl, and then add the vitamin water to it, and stir. ;)

@starri33 People will tell you that because they are used to seeing the chick's only in the spring and summer, and egg laying will slow down in the winter with some breed's. I guess they don't realize that we hatch in the house in incubators now, and broodies aren't always used to hatch chick's.

May have an egg bound chicken. Can anyone tell me the symptoms? She won’t come out of the box and when she does she has her wings out and is walking funny. Also missing feathers underneath her

Egg Bound Symptoms
  • Decreased appetite and drinking.
  • Lethargic, sitting around, fluffed up.
  • 'looks sick', depressed.
  • Shaky wings.
  • Walks like a penguin – she will periodically stop walking and try to squat.
  • Abdominal straining – the cloaca (vent) can be seen straining to expel something.

@BlueBaby I read all those but not all those symptoms apply to her. It’s weird she was fine yesterday. I was able to get her to sit in some warm water and she did drink some water. My son was able to pull this weird soft piece of shell out of her vent. I felt her abdomen it feels soft. She is excreting this whitish liquid from her vent. I tried to separate her from the flock and she freaked out. I’m not sure she is gonna make it.:( All my other girls are fine

@Suzyqschickens
I had a girl that was eggbound. She wouldn't eat and kind of stopped walking around like she was in the zone like they get when they're laying.

If you gently move your hand down between her legs you'll likely feel the egg.

A warm epsom salt bath worked great for my girl. Gently massage her abdomen while she's in the bath too, then keep her in a warm dim place. I used a heating pad under a towel in a cage with a towel over the outside of the cage.

Ok I read about that. I just don’t know. I am not home now but before I left she went back to the one nesting box and wouldn’t even open her eyes. She just looked limp....

If you read further down the page that I gave you the link to, it tell's you what to do. Oh, and make sure she's dry again before putting her outside in the cold.

Poor girl...:( That does look an awful lot like vent gleet. What a pain in the butt! (excuse the pun) It is treatable, though!
