Fellow AZ peeps, I'm in need of some advice!! Just brought home three 5 month old EE pullets yesterday from a lady who lives in Mesa, and I live in Clarkdale, AZ. They're in a 4×4×4 quarantine coop with just a roost, nest box, bedding, food and water until I integrate them with the rest of the flock. My question is this: do I need to do anything special to help them adjust to the difference in climate? They're used to the weather down in the valley and temps are supposed to drop down to about 16°F by Friday night.

I don't think that you will have any problem. As you said, they are 5 month's old. Chicken's are hardier than some people think. We also have had a few night's here already when the temp was freezing over night. They will huddle together for warmth if they need to.

Thank you! I thought so, but that little paranoid "new mom" voice in the back of my head was like, "...are you sure???" LOL

At that age as long as they have a draft free place to get out of the weather they should be fine, but it would probably be good to get some electrolytes or similar poultry supplement to add to their water for the next few days to help with all the stress.
 
@MissLavender Only my opinion, I would put a blanket or something over an area of their pen - by the roosts would be best and move it up little by little as they get used to the weather. My pen for quarantine is easy to do as its a real large dog xpen with a top. I use a moving blanket - like you can get at Harbor Freight for cheap. I take it off in the morning or move it back as needed - thinking you might get some snow in your area later this week. Anyhow it always helped me take care of that mommy voice in my head. PLUS it put them to sleep easier. Have fun with your newbies.
 
It is dang cold out there at feeding time. Clean roosts and put in extra straw/bedding for the cold. It is supposed to be in the 20s tonight for those girls. We had big frost this morning - 33 is what my thermometer said. The year before last I got too much sun at the Renaissance Festival - doesn't look to get warm for a bit yet! Stay warm friends.
