I also have a grow out pen thats attached to the main pen so the grow up as neighbors. Once they're big enough to hold their own... Anywhere from 10-16 weeks depending on how crowded the grow out gets... I move them into the big coop at night so they all wake up together. The following few days are still a little hairy, but there is never any blood or anything.

Yea, I come and go from this one. You can only talk so much about the weather lol. Most of the people on this thread are ok.

When you hatch chicks without a broody, do you move them in with bigger chickens or keep those separate and add a roo to the pullets later?

I guess that would depend on if you wanted to have one flock, or 2 separate flock's. If you want only one flock, then keep them separate until they are big enough to be able to get away from the bigger adults when introduced, because they will have to endure going through a pecking order ordeal. Have separate feed and water stations, as the adults will try to run the new one's away from the food and water.

My chicks are 4 weeks and already out and about. I have ants in the mini coop so they're moving in with the bigs tonight. I'm going to give them their bin back and move their roost but leave the little coop open during the day. Not going up on the roost, but going in the main coop.

Do the ants have their mound inside if it? I had that bad ant problem last year, remember? Those ant's will eat those babies up alive. I lost a few chick's last year to the ant's. I treated for the ant's, and have already started looking for new one's this year and getting a jump start. Hopefully I can do away with the problem this year.

Yes I do remember, I'm sure that was terribly upsetting for you!

We can't find the mound that's the problem. So far a few chicks have a couple of owies and nothing serious.

Follow the ant's. That's how I found the mound's. Ant's also like to put the mound's under those big landscaping types of rock's, because that's where my next-door neighbor found some in her yard. She has now changed her mind about getting even more of those rock's.

That yard is full of loose sandy soil and pine shavings so it's impossible to follow them. I walked away is disgust lol.

If they've been able to see eachother up until now, and you are moving them at night. It should be ok. I always make sure there's multiple food, water, and shade sources so nobody gets left out. They will probably huddle in whatever corner is closest to where they used to be, trying to get back, for the first couple days. So provide shade and water near there.
