They actually like to hang out in the big coop during the day so once it's dark I'll move them tonight. I'm sure I'll hear pitiful cries afterward but it'll be better than getting ant bites.

I'm lucky that my flock is pretty easy going. They don't really care about the little ones unless there's food involved and the chicks are so fast I don't think the bigs have actually made contact. Haha! Little punks.

I think since that one chick was a couple days ahead and was ready to leave the nest that she took him on an outing and left the other two unprotected and another bird did it.
The chick drowned in water that I thought was too high for him to get into. Interestingly, the hen went back into the nest all broody again as if she wanted to start all over. So I took a chance and put the chicks from the incubator under her. So far so good. I also planted an egg in another nest hoping the rest of the hens will get the hint and leave her alone.

@Hamburg if you still want chicks... I can still bring you ones that simply aren't my favorites. I have more than enough!

Yes I am, if you still want to let them go. they would fill out the young flock I am putting together. If the Lebanon road meet doesn't work out I can drive to Fort Thomas. Here is my email we can make arrangements [email protected].

I currently live near my home town of Safford. I was down to a few old hens, so I hatched some out over the last few months. Hubby and I will be taking a trip out of town from May 30th through June 3rd, We have a house and critter sitter coming in to stay while we are gone. I'm not sure about leaving these guys (girls actually) in their pen and having her have to deal with them, I'm guessing that they are at least 10 weeks if not more. They've been in the grow out inside the coop for at least 4 weeks. The smallest of the bunch is about half the size of my smallest hen.. I'm thinking that she's a bantam. She's a small girl. Do you think it's safe to let them out? Sir Poops a Lot came to me over being introduced to soon. They do keep trying to escape when I open the door to change out feed and water.

So apparently she has decided to only accept the four light colored chicks. I couldn't find the dark one then finally located her wedged in behind the nest box. :oops: Got her out and tried sending her back to her siblings and mom immediately attacked her!:smack I looked and she's got both fresh and dried blood on her neck from repeated peckings... :hit So she ended up back in the brooder all by her lonesome.... Poor thing. But I'm working on getting her to a new home very soon. Hopefully momma doesn't turn on any of the others...
But on another note, I have yet ANOTHER broody as of Thurday night! This one is a Jersey Giant cross in the other pen under my Bresse/NN rooster Blue! She's got at least a couple from her sisters and her own, a couple from the homozygous partridge girls, and a couple blue eggs from the Ameraucana. So excited!!

I would think if they have been in the coop among the other birds for that long, they will probably be fine. I would take them out of the grow out at night, and put them on the perches with the big girls so they all wake up together as if it was meant to be. They may try to get back in the grow-out once morning breaks because that is where they are used to being. They may bunch up in a corner for the first couple days just out of self preservation, and you may have to put them back on the perches at night But I'll bet they'll be ok. Roosters naturally know when a hen is of egg laying age so shouldn't harass them or anything. You may see a bit of squabbling, but as long as no major blood is spilled it will all work out within just 2-3 days.

I would try it while you still have time before you leave on your trip to see how it all work's out between them.
