Arizona Chickens

Not yet really, I've been able to tell generally before they have all their feathers, but this time around, nothing..lol., So we'll wait and see, they will be getting booted out to the grow out earlier than normal. I've got another hatch due out the second week during March.

24 eggs today and I think I have a new layers, found a small egg, not fart egg size, but smaller than a regular small egg.. trying to think of who it might be. Going to have to go in and take another head count, after sending a bunch of Roo's off, it's less than 50, but I know more than 35.. I think it's one of the NN's from Charlie that I've left in with the main flock.

That sound's like "chicken math" to me! :lau

I hope everyone is staying dry! it was beautiful this morning, sun shining, birds singing then BOOM! lighting, Thunder and hail. quits, sun comes back out, warms up and boom, dumps hail again. now there's not a cloud anywhere

Over here the sun was shining at the same time that rain was coming down. No thunder or hail, though. How are you doing over there otherwise?

Getting over a cold at the moment, a pair of coyotes got my last two hens at the same time , the only morning I'm not home! It was so windy, I can't really blame them and I expected them to show up out of desperation, but not 11 in the morning! My Hens had a good life (they were pushing 8, maybe 9) and at least coyotes are a quicker death than raccoons or something. Also solves the problems on how to incorporate my ordered chicks and fix up the hen house without stressing them out while they live there.
I wished they hadn't got my barred rock, I liked my barred rock.
:rant why couldn't they just nabbed the production red.
Oh well.:hmm
How's your wee peeps doing?

Sorry that you lost your last 2 hen's. Were they out free-ranging when the coyotes got them? That pair may have some pups to feed somewhere so maybe that's why they took them both. They will be back for the new one's that you will be getting if they can have any access to them. What breed's of chick's did you order?

My 8 chick's are doing well. I have 7 NN's, and 1 BCM. They got their first taste of the wet chick feed today, and liked it (after they discovered that it was something to eat). ;)

They do free range during they day and get locked in from dusk to dawn, I live in a neighborhood, there's not a whole lot of predators Unless the weather gets bad over a few days, then the coyotes get desperate. Which they did, I even waited until 10 am to let them out because I had a feeling, when they usually get let out about 7 or 8.
I ordered 3 australorps, 6 Barred rocks, 3 speckled sussex and 3 Columbian Wyandottes and the free "exotic" (aka ee cockerel) chick because I'm a sucker, apparently.
I should have ordered more sussex and lorps, I have a feeling I'm really going to like them.
I'm really hoping I'll get a female mystery chick, maybe something really cool like a campine. ( I added a few exotic breeds on my wish list in case that effects the breed of the mystery chick, I highly doubt it, but here's hoping.) (someone's selling deathlayer eggs on craiglistfor $10 a pop, I'm slightly tempted.)
Lol, I love that about baby things! They'll stuff anything into their mouths except actual food. "nah, we'll chew on this piece of tape for a while, that stuff that everyone else is eating looks scary."
Are you able to guess on what genders you hatched? with my luck, they'd all be roos.

The Austalorp's lay egg's well and they are a good size. I had some of those before.

I seen that Deathlayer one that you are talking about. They only lay a medium sized egg, though, and I like large egg's. I thought about getting some Deathlayer's before, but I don't want to spend that kind of price for a smaller egg.

No, I don't know the sexes of them yet. It will probably be a couple more week's until I can start to tell good. I'm definitely keeping the blue naked neck one and the naked neck one with the smaller bowtie, and possibly the FBCM that has the hairy leg's :lau, just because it's the only one.

Now I want one:wee a hen only:thumbsup
