Arizona Chickens

Good Morning :) question for any silkie parents, how big are your coops? are they walk in's or something you can reach in? while my chicks are not at coop stage yet, they are getting there, I've got 4 in a grow out pen outside and two little ones in the house.. I know how susceptible to the chicken math virus, so I want to build with at least room for 10 to 20.. lol.. Everything I've read so far has suggested 8" per silkie, I'm thinking 1 sq ft per bird. nest boxes where they stick out of the side with a lid that I can reach in for collecting the eggs, the coop it's self has to be short enough that a person 5'2" can reach in for cleaning.. suggestions?

I've just got several silkies and other bantams.. I see references for 1-2 sq ft per bantam chicken. I just bought a large bunny hutch that had a lower "run" area, with a ramp that will go up to their "coop". It has a total of 9 sq ft of area, which I'll have 3-4 chickens in. These guys are crazy running around and chasing each other (they pick up "toys" and try to take it away), so I'd think more space is better. If they weren't indoors, I'd probably collect every bantam breed!

My son and daughter-in-law live in Surprise. They would love to be able to buy fresh eggs. I told them I would ask in here. Does anyone in that area sell their eggs?
I'm in surprise also. I haven't seen any fresh eggs for sale, but there is a farm that sets up a table off of Peoria/Bullard a couple days a week. They might have some.

Thank you. I'm thinking that my idea for the coop would work, 8 ft long, 4 ft wide, that would give me 32 sq ft, I don't think that I'll end up with that many, notice I said "think" lol, I only intended to have 6 hens, I'm now sitting at 50+, the nest boxes would be sticking out of the side with a lid to lift up so that I could access the eggs so it would not take away floor space.. :)

Hi AZ chicken people, I have been absent for a while. Long story, not interesting to most people! I am still in Prescott AZ, and have some chicks on the way from Ideal and Sandhill Preservation. I ordered the Sandhill chicks in Jan, long before the Corona problem, scheduled for August hatch -- I thought we would be traveling this summer --LOL! So, when our summer travel plans to California were canceled, I ordered chicks from Ideal for June 10. I only want to keep a few, but they make you order 25, or they will fill the box with roosters! So, I have some Brown Sex link and Dark Brown Layer mix on the way that could use a home. The order was placed in April, but now they say on their web site that the soonest delivery is August.

if she's still laying, I believe she's not broody, but you could always buy her some hatching eggs..lol, find someone local with a breed you want. I bought silkie eggs, only got two of them to hatch, but I blame that on myself, my incubator wasn't doing right
I was wondering about that too, I'm pretty sure she laid yesterday but not today. Two lay 44 g eggs and two lay 53 g eggs (approx) and she's one who lays the smaller ones. I went to goodwill and got a wire crate, she's in it now. The last straw was, I grabbed her off the nest this morning, she panicked at first but hen hung out with the others, but she looks very thin to me. I tried locking everyone out of the pen, but then another bird wanted to lay, so it was causing a general panic to close off the pen for everyone. She must've been "building up" for this, it was just not very noticeable until she stayed in the box when the others went to roost, because I think every now and then they spend a bit more time in the box. Any way, she mingled with the others for a while, but went to the nest that I left more or less in tact with bedding, as I had stripped the one she was brooding in, bare. There were feathers in it, I think consistent with her chest feathers. I'll see if she lays an egg. I get about 3.3 eggs per day on average from the 4, so I'm hoping this is over before the weather heats up again.

Good to see you here again! I hope that you find someone who will help to split your extra's.
