Arizona Chickens

So far those chick's seem to be doing ok out there. The lady that I got them from said that she had them in a container in a shed that had a temp of 105-F. to get them used to the heat, but there have been day's already since I've had them that the temp has been an average of 115-F. I have been topping the water bowls off with cold water several times a day.

This is the last week that I have to do the animal's next door, as she will be back home on the 29th. But then I will have to help my DH after his back operation on the 1st. He will be coming back home in a back brace that he will have to wear for awhile, and not allowed to lift anything over like a gallon jug of water.

Chicks do seem to be able to take the heat better than older birds. When it gets to 100 here, I put ice in their water and run the sprinkler on a corner of the pen. The White Rocks seem to be the only ones that pant -- much.

Mine get ice in the water also. I have to be careful where I step out there because I have 2 pullet's out there that think that they need to be by my feet.

I still have those 2 Blue Laced Red Barnevelder hen's out there also that I haven't sold yet. Since they are a year old now, I guess I can officially call them hen's now.

The monsoon season has finally arrived! A downpour and full rain barrel. Flash flood warnings for Prescott and our neighborhood, White Spar Campground. Temp's dropped to 65, too.

Sent it up here when you're down with it, we've had very sparse rain as well.
I believe I've found the culprit.

She's got to be laying. Look how red her comb and wattles are. You could name her Peek-a-boo, because you found her?

Good afternoon AZ. I've had my d'Uccle chicks outside since they were 24 hours old. It seems like they sleep in the hottest part of the day, but they are by far less stressed by it than the rest of the crew. I didn't have a chance to get ice this morning but I'll be up and out early for it tomorrow. No rain for us so lots of watering plants and checking on the birds all day. Made squash fritters to go with salmon for dinner tonight.

@BlueBaby Igor had back surgery about 10 years ago or so. Had the brace, his was about 10 hours long and 5 days in the hospital. Still has a foot long scar and a weight limit of 40 lbs max.

My DH had one of those Laser Spine Surgeries about that long ago too. This time it will be a different type of surgery near where that last one was done, and they will be putting rod's and pins in there to fuse his spine.

Yup that's what Igor has. Although they did some kind of other thing in there too.

Would anyone like to have my Naked Neck rooster named Roger? He would be for free, and is a nice rooster. I will be using 2 other boy's for next year to keep my gene diversity going in my flock. I would like Roger to be able to have a chance to be happy in a new flock so that I will not have to end his life unnecessarily if no one takes him.

Roger is a hunk. I would think any NN breeder would drool over him! I have seen him, and he is huge!
