Arizona Chickens

Anyone in az have actual experience with mareks? From what I have read my older hens should be ok? How long does it hang around? If I get new ones and vaccinate am I safe? I love my girls and this is killing me
Yes I do. The vaccine only hides the symptoms it does not prevent your birds from getting it. Your older birds might be ok, and based on the age of the birds you’ve lost I’m thinking Marek’s is the culprit. You can’t be sure without necropsy though as you know.
No bloody stools and you’ve had a fecal float test done for worms?

Regardless, a good plan of action is to to scrub out your coops with dish soap, let them dry and then spray with Virkon S. You’ll need to remove the litter and replace, clean the nest boxes, etc.

Don’t beat yourself up over it. The disease is shed in their dander and can blow in on the wind with dust, be carried in by wild birds or rodents, etc. Your best course of action is to immediately put down anyone exhibiting symptoms and breed from those that are exhibiting resistance. Also clean and sanitize before adding chicks.

I was watching a clinical video of cocid and it was a slow loss of balance before being unable to get up, over a few days. Did they have any weird poops?
No she has normal poop and almost completely paralyzed this am. Called Midwestern university yesterday hoping they could get her in. No they referred me somewhere else. They will do the necropsy but I need a vet to give the ok. That’s gonna be pricey so I have declined. Pretty sure it is mareks 😢

so she hasn’t been in my nesting boxes she isn’t laying yet. So how do I clean the dirt? Till it? She’s the only one right now and I have her separate from the rest. I am with you and hope my older girls are safe! I have 32 eggs in an incubator I planned on vaccinating even before this crap. How long before I can allow them in the coop? I am beating myself up 6 chickens to this and more still to come? Ugh it’s been horrible watching this happen to my beautiful babies

Im so sorry, i can't even imagine 😪♥️

@Suzyqschickens I agree with what @igorsMistress told you about the cleaning of the coop and run above. I do not vaccinate any of the chick's that I hatch over here, and they all seem to do fine. They seem to be able to build up a natural immunity to thing's. I did loose a fully feathered necked hen to the high heat this summer, though. I also had to deal with 5 broody hen's in that heat.

This heat has been ugly!! I did lose one to the heat and was pretty sad about that. But this paralyzed chicken is a whole new level of annoying!
