The best of breed silkie was a black cock, too large of comb and very sparse leg feathering. All around him were these other beautiful birds (Did you see the Gallaghers' birds? Oh, so pretty!And your silkies were absolutely gorgeous too, Ms. Suze) but he got best of breed and they didnt. The junior show went better, maybe because we got Mr. Kennedy and he is AWESOME.

Hello everyone! I have been out of the loop for a little while. We have had all kinds of sickness running through this house. I was so sad to miss the poultry show! I have never been to anything like that and was really looking forward to it. My husband was even wanting to go and he isn't as into the chickens as I am. Oh, well. Is this an every year thing? I sure hope we don't miss it next time.

Tanichca, CONGRATS! How exciting! You know so much about these chickens. Reading your post about knowing what to look for in the breeds was great. I have a white silky rooster. To me, he's beautiful. But, I have no idea what judges look for. Maybe sometime I should take a picture and post it. Everyone here can tell me if he is as beautiful to others as he is to us. We are a homeschooling family, too. I wish we could have met you at the show. How many siblings do you have?

Nuclear, your rooster sounds obnoxious. I thought our last one was bad because he plucked the hens' wings until they were bloody. We gave him away, but the guy gave him back. He said that rooster was even trying to mate with his rabbits, and it was just too much. The coyotes took care of him, though.

NoSkiveez, how is your hen? Anymore gigantic eggs? That looked so painful! As someone who has had natural childbirth with big babies, I can relate. Does the egg come out all broken, or is it soft?

Angie, so sorry you lost your hen.

So happy I have the day off tomorrow. My girls really worked me a lot this week. I had to stop and see the chiropractor on the way home from work.

OH, and the Blu-Kote... I had to try and hide my hands for a week once!

5Pinkarrows - She passed a an unshelled egg. I found the membrane in the crate. She is doing okay now. I've added calcium to her water and put her back in with the babies. The egg she laid was soft shelled and the shell was pretty much crushed. When I picked it up off the paper towel it was flat on that side. I don't know if it was laid crushed or if it got crushed after. I knew she had another because she walked funny. She will have one more chance. If she binds again, I think the best thing may be to put her down. :-(

I remember the post. I didn't fill it out. I had been approached like that for a dog book and it was a scam to sell a book. Basically they wouldn't put your dog in the book unless you paid an outrageous amount for the book, so I figured it was the same sort of deal. Good to know there are some legit things still out there. I'm sorry about your hen.

Nuclear: That rooster sounds horrible. Even with a good roo, mating is a wham bam thank you ma'am affair, but even a young and inexperienced roo shouldn't be savaging his hens like that.
