Arizona Chickens

If anyone here travels pretty frequently, how do you ensure your hens are happy and safe while you’re away on trips? Some relatives wanted to plan a trip later in the year but I’m worried about leaving my hens alone for more than two or three days. Any tips?

I don't travel, but I got started in wanting to raise my own chicken's because one of my next door neighbors had some and would travel. I watched their flock for them while they were gone, and they let me keep all of the egg's. That neighbor no longer has chicken's anymore now.

Now, I have my own flock, and got the neighbor on the other side of me started up with a flock from out of mine. I usually have to watch out for and feed their flock, plus 2 goat's and 2 dog's for them for several week's while they are gone. We have it worked out that instead of them paying me the cash, they pick me up some feed when they go get their feed.

I just use pet sitters.. most that i have used are very "animal" type people, they have horses, typically, or work at vet clinics, so any type of animal is ok with them. They usually charge by the visit.. like $15 per 30 min visit. But i usually have them visit to meet the animals (and me checking them out) before i am stuck needing help.

There is one lady who is on the arizona backyard chickens facebook page that specifically takes care of farm animals. She posts pretty regularly (i don't have the info myself). But for a small flock, i couldn't imagine a pet sitter declining.. check food, water? Not hard.

That’s great! And I love the deal you have worked out :)

That’s very true, all we really need is someone who will rinse off their waterer and fill it up again. When the time comes I’ll definitely check out the Facebook page

Maybe you could work out a deal similar with one of your neighbor's. That way it's not far for them to go, and being close by they are able to see if there are any predator's on the loose that could be a threat.

We really don’t talk to our neighbors but we’re on pretty friendly terms, maybe I should start to gift them some eggs ;)
