Arizona Chickens

The pea combs are not really what you need in the desert, anyway.
For a while I was getting 3 big green eggs every day from these NNs, and only 3 of them lay green eggs. Now they are down to 1 or 2, but the White Rocks and Brown sex-link have just taken a break completely this week, so I am short of eggs for the people who usually get them from me. There are some new layers growing up, but they are still too young. I will be selling the small white eggs instead if this keeps up, some people like them if I give them 18 small eggs for the same price as 12 large ones. I have been pickling the smallest in jars, they are just the perfect size to pop one in your mouth.

Yes, my egg count has fallen also, and with the 2 broodie's, those 2 aren't laying at all right now. The color of egg's that I am getting right now out of my girl's are white, sort of a cream off white, and lighter tan. Color's that can easily be seen through during candling if incubating.

You don't even need an incubator with those 2 broodies working for you! They need to pay their rent somehow! :lau

Hello everyone, I'm new to the group. I was wondering if you could help me identify 2 chicks the black/grey and yellow ones, and also if my speckled sussex is a cockerel? All are about 5 weeks. Also with the yellow one, it looks poorly to me, I've never raised chickens before but there's new feather growth coming in so idk if thats why it looks this way? It's had a bulging under the vent area since we got it that has me concerned but idk if it's normal with this breed? It eats and poops normally, it's always wet too but I haven't seen if it's jumping in the water bowls. My husband cant remember the names of the black and yellow so I haven't been able to look up others like it for more info.

Those 2 are the same chick with the red comb, he is the only one with red that appeared last week.
Welcome to the AZ BYC!
I would also say the yellow one is a meat bird, Cornish-X, they are always eating and bulging like that! The dark birds look like a mix, maybe for a colored egg layer? The little boy in the last 2 photos looks like he is already pretty full of himself! Boy all the way there.

The two older Dorkings, Dora and Mari, must have been spending too much time listening to the Leghorns clucking and crowing. They seem to think they're Leghorns, too. They're upping the egg production. It's been 2 days since I checked the nest box, and there were 4 eggs in it. And they have been on ant and bug patrol. Now if I can only convince them that flies are flying raisins....

Hopeful Homesteader, where are you? I'm in east central AZ, and the only one of the group out here.

Welcome Hopeful homesteader - glad you joined us here in the Arizona group. Are you raising chickens more for eggs or also meat? Seems like you might have more than one cockerel but I'm no expert- I hope some are females for eggs if that is your goal.
