Arizona Chickens

5pinkarrows,

Thanks for noticing... When we get the lid that protects the feed from the rain attached, we will take more pictures. In the pictures, the big orange bucked on the left is hung by hook and sits on the edge of a plank. The nipples are at the bottom for them to get a drink. On the right, a plastic flower pot is attached to another plank up off the ground so that they do not scratch at it with their feet. they reach up and in, which keeps the feed in the feeder. We do not have feed in it yet as we are waiting for the cover. It does work good. I will ask my DH to take more shots so you can see how it is made.

Hello all!! Hope your holidays are going great!
I was told to put my Christmas wish list here, and no not getting an early start on next year.
Santa wasn't happy with my wish list,so now I need to take care of it myself.

Mahonri had French Black Copper Marans.... he'll probably have a new flock later in the year. I don't know about the rest. Lavender Orpingtons sound awesome, let me know if you find a source!

I had to cull one of my chickens over Christmas

. At least now I know I can do it (my first non-fish kill). One of my young roosters attacked her and beat her up so bad that she would not have made it. I was suspicious that somebody was pecking but was never able to observe anything. He was always so nice when I was there. I had to sneak up to the window in the dark and observe the coop for a while with the red light on. I finally nailed the culprit. "Brutus" is now in solitary confinement until ready for the frying pan. He does not like it but I have no sympathy. At least peace is back in the coop.
Here the rest of the list: Lost my second cat to an owl on Christmas Day, my dog was diagnosed with valley fever and one of my horses has a fist size hole in his fur. Just got scalped by something. He is fine though, I am treating him succesfully without having to get the vet involved. Wonder what else is going to happen before the year is over...

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to post about my "Christmas Peeps"! Got a brooder full of cute fuzziness, and wanted to post on here before I list them to Craigslist. These are the first "open for sale" Aloha Chickens - the breeding project that myself and a few others around here are working on. Alohas are supposed to be similar to Speckled Sussex but in a much wider variety of mottled colors, similar to the Swedish Flower Hens.

So far I'm getting loads of cool colors, but still need work on the size thing. Rolling in eggs here, the eggs are small but these are productive layers and very hardy chickens, personable and clever. I'll be hatching these locally and selling on here and on Craigslist, so be sure to contact me if you'd like a batch. Hoping to start shipping chicks across the country starting later this spring. I have an entire web site dedicated to these, see it here:

http://alohachickens.webs.com/

(Tip: Start at the last menu item and work backwards to see the most recent pics, it's kind of like a blog - the last entries posted on there are the most recent pics.)

I just took some more photos of the parents, will try to post them on here! These chicks can turn out any of these colors or even new ones! Check out the mottled orange with BLUE tail, and the mostly-white color with dark speckles, unique to this flock, a color I've been calling "Confetti".

I'd love to see these go to a BYC member get them, where they can post pics here of what they look like all grown up, rather than a random Craigslister that I might never hear from again, so please contact me ASAP if you want these or a future batch. Chicks are still hatching now, but looks like I'll have between 10-15 chicks total. Price I was going to put them on Craigslist for was $2 each or the whole group (no matter how many eventually hatch) for $15 total, so that's $1-$2 per chick. I'm located in SW Phoenix. You can PM me here if you'd like to buy them.

Don't forget to contact me if you want a future batch - getting a new 'bator next week, and plan to fill both, so I may have (hopefully) between 40-60 chicks for sale in a few weeks!

Thanks!

Sommer

Maybe if I can get rid of some of my non-SQ silkies. My Dad is planning to enlarge the coop (converting the covered run into a coop because my birds are *finally* learning to free range) and these look so pretty!

I will think about it, but no birds until spring probably.

Hello all! Glad to hear most had nice holidays!

Things here were crazy with In-laws, friends, and my family. The kids had a blast and they even woke up to hear Santa's reindeer running off our roof.

Our birds are still all on stike. We haven't had any eggs for almost 2 months now!

Sommer, Amazing how well you have done with this project. Get the size up and they'll be perfect.

Are you all ready for the cold. Weatherman said this morning that it would get down to 27!

I hope not. I only have two pepper plants in my garden at present so I guess I could cover those.

I guess my waterer by the run will freeze too. Geesh... we live in Phoenix!!
