Arizona Chickens

Not too much rain here. Everythings just a muddy mess. The bee tree is gonna get it tonight tho. I may end up shoveling more dirt into a coop incase it pours in the night. Oh, and my free loading polish laid an egg. Its been a long while since I've gotten an egg from them. I hope they keep up.

5pinksparrow-i have no chicken management skills. I dont even know how many chickens i have now. Im guessing 50 adult and 50 under 12 weeks. Otherwise I could have the 5 chickens I originally started with. Lol. These quail do have a purpse tho. The are going to be eaten. In the last 24 hours, 72 hens have laid 91 eggs. Not bad!

I hope everyone gets all the rain/snow they want and not a drop more. I must head off to bed, last night was a horrific joke (almost 2 year old bed burglar) threw up in my bed, in my hair and all over my clothes. Not a,good night.

The wind is kicking up here now. My wind gauge says 25 mph sustained right now. I don't kno wif my tarp is going to still be on the AZ room in the morning.

I have lice back in my coop. I am sooooo frustrated by this. I thought we finally had it licked, but it's baaaaaack!

Loving the rain! Hoping to see snow on Daisy Mt. in the morning...

NoSkiveez, you are so funny! I know you donm't know how many you have, but it takes mad skillz to be able to feed and clean up after 100ish chickens. That is a lot of quail eggs! Are you going to eat them all, hatch them, or sell them? That sounds like a really neat undertaking there, but I don't think I could do it. I am squeamish about killing spiders even. Scorpions and flies don't seem to bother me, but I know I couldn't do it to a bird unless we were starving to death. We had a hen once with her intestines hanging out. If my husband hadn't been here, I would have just let her go until she died on her own. I know that sounds cruel, but I just don't have it in me. As for your bed burglar--ICK!!! That is NOT a good way to wake up. I hope the culprit is feeling better soon. I have three sickos myself right now, though only one throwing up.

I am so paranoid about this cold and my chickens. I just went out to check on them again. I moved a couple around again in hopes they could get a little warmer. 3 were still on top of the house and too hard to reach. At least it stopped raining.

Bob, I am hearing the wind whipping around out there, too. I really, really hate cold and would be thrilled to never have to go through this. It just seems wrong here in AZ, doesn't it. It serves me right for bragging about 85* temps last week to my friends back east that were dealing with severe cold.

Geez! It's bad enough to be out in the rain with 26 mph winds at midnight putting tarps on the sides of the AZ room to try and stop the wind and sideways rain from hitting the poor chickens, but now LIGHTNING?!?! Give me a break! I'm done, hope they stay warm enough.

Looks like I finished just in time, it started coming down in buckets just now. We're up to 1.3 in. of rain so far.

Thanks for the condolences on the chicks. Guess it happens, but it gets discouraging.

Bob I was looking at the radar and noticed that you had a real heavy thunderstorm pass over.

It's miserable here, but I don't think it will get down to 28.

50 out, VERY wet and VERY windy.

I hope the tarps didnt' come off of my breeding pens.

Bootzie... hope those Marans and that beautiful roo do OK... how old are the little ones.. .If they are over 16 weeks, they'll be find.

I put a pair of 15 week old Ams in the Big coop this week. I couldn't keep them out in the rain. They stay right in the coop and when the others are all out in the run they eat at the feeder and drink at the waterer in the coop.

2 days and we should have CHICKIES!

I'm so sorry for your chicken losses today.

I'm hoping all goes well for you both here on out.

This weather, meh, low desert weather is always so fickle so we can't get used to it and I've been here forever, lol. Not too many places can ever claim the national high temp & low temp on the same day.

I get flooding here on this property and usually get pumps to pump out the rain water the day after a hard or long constant rains like this. My hens are on higher low ground so I'm hoping I don't have to do a major move of them during the night. Should be ok unless we get near record rainfall. Other than that possibility, their little hoop coop is always partially covered for shade during the day and I button them down each night to keep the neighborhood cats that are prowling around from fussing them. I've been out there 4x already tonight ankle deep in rain water, and rising, wading to get there to check on them and seeing to one of the rabbits in the barn with an eye issue.

It's gonna be a rainy mess for a couple of days around here. Edit to update...wasn't too bad with water. No major flooding...yay!

Wickenburg is not far from Wittman yet my raingauge only measures 10mm so far (ca 2/5th inch). Funny how that sometimes works in AZ. It's raining right now though and I can hear the wind howling like crazy around the house. It's dark out and I swear I somehow landed over night in Siberia. Soo glad I built that chickenhouse completely overkill. No need to do anything until tonight when the temps supposedly crash so low it will overwhelm the thermometers... Chickens are safe, dry, and "warm" for now.

again my chickens turned in to ducks i walked out there at 2am with a head light to see most of them splashing around in the water while the cochins and my Cornish just looked at them funny under the tarp i set up but everyones dry fed and im off to the feed store to keep them that way
