Arizona Chickens

I use straw and so far everything has been OK. Every so often I shovel it all out and replace it. One of these days I need to get a compost bin.
Maybe this guy will bring you one for Christmas, if you've been a good girl. :gig

I clean it out periodically, it's really the fresh straw that they like to rifle through for seeds. I do have straw and some bestcob in the nest boxes, no problems there.
That's what I get for posting when I haven't had much sleep. I meant: I heard that straw can build up in the crop and cause problems. Of course my tired fingers defaulted to "coup!" 🤪

I have a very old story on that, told to me by my dogs' internal medicine specialist....a patient was switched slowly to hundenflocken and had diarrhea (lots) that couldn't resolve. after a bunch of tests including an abdominal ultrasound, they found a problem that would have killed the dog, they found it only because of the diarrhea/ultrasound. So, sometimes switching can get even more expensive than the food. That said, I hope there's something that works out for you, that's reasonably priced and readily available.
You make a good point... I might look into doing some cooking intentionally for the dogs like @Parront mentioned awhile back somewhere... on second thought that was an in-person conversation... maybe it's on here somewhere too.

no worries, the spell-corrector has gotten me too! I've only seen my birds peck at the straw, I assume they're looking for, and eating, seeds from the strands. I've never seen them try to eat a strand of straw.

I emailed the picture of the 4 chick's to the lady down by Tucson that is doing a hatch from her flock of Bielefelder's and she sent me back an answer:

All I see are females, you lucky duck! Glad they worked out for you

I’ve got your eggs in the incubator with a projected hatch day of December 5. I’ll shoot you an email when the hatch starts.

Best,
Erin
