Arizona Chickens

In a case like that, does one just try to re-direct the aggressors? If it does get bad like that, what do I do with the one being bullied? Do I just 'guard' her for awhile until the others lose interest? (I know nothing about behavior dynamics with chickens.) I would hope I wouldn't have to completely remove her.
Hopefully it'll just be a minor re-sorting, since they're a sub flock. Hopefully you'll see that they're all together, then you and the seller catch them when you arrive. When people are really integrating, like young birds into an older flock, they have separate waterers/feeders out of line of sight of each other, hiding spots, obstacles. But in your case, like bluebaby says.

So Saturday is the big day to bring home our very first chickens ever! They'll be pullets. I've been warned that they will need to sort out their new pecking order when they arrive because there will be a new dynamic since they will no longer be with the larger group where they had been living.

Is there anything I need to watch out for? Do I let them sort things out on their own? Is there a point where I might need to intervene? (We'll probably be arriving back home with them around early/mid-afternoon.)
How exciting! If they were already together, not really. They should work it out just fine amongst themselves. You only need to intervene if there’s blood.

In Chino Valley I got over 3 /10ths of rain in today and yesterday's storm total. That's 9/10ths total in last couple weeks! I observed and corrected some grading and drainage issues this morning in the Lazy River while it was slightly drizzly.
That's great! so it was easier to work the ground, and see where the water was going, so you could fine tune it?

Okay Arizonians, I am back with my July feed store report. I went to the Western Ranchman today and their entire baby chick display had been moved from where it normally sits -- so they simply are closed down for the summer. I asked about it and the owner said that their chick season is September to May and that it's really all about the shipping process. They only buy sexed pullets if I recall correctly, and he said in this weather half of them don't make the journey alive. So they take a break.

And for any desert milkweed seekers, Summer Winds on Tatum has a spot for it but they are currently out of stock. They say the order should come in sometime in August. In case you, like me, are reading the butterfly articles and want to plant a little habitat :)

Thanks for the info on the milkweed, I’ll postpone my trip to summer winds until next month.

Is this the type of milkweed you were looking for?

Ooooh gosh I think they are different. That would be so cool to be able to get a big packet of seeds! I'm coming to understand that there "milkweed" actually is a pretty big family of plants and the ones that do best here are a smaller subset. Summer Winds said they had 2 arid varieties, the Desert Milkweed and one other.

I've been to Butterfly Wonderland which is pretty nice (especially when it's reeeeally hot because they climate control it), but I've had even more fun finding out that my latest "arida" passionfruit plant is a host for the gulf fritillary butterfly. I wouldn't mind adding a few monarchs to the mix!
