Use plastic water containers. It does something to the metal ones.

The waterer in the kennel is the (plastic) bottom part that you can stick an upsidedown 2 liter soda bottle on. (I think it is showing one of my pictures earlier.) But I appreciate knowing that metal and antibiotic water don't mix. It might be important some day.

Thank you for asking about Cachubby. He died last night I"m sad to say. I'd been washing his face every morning and evening with antibiotics, replaced his water with gatorade to try and give him a boost. Didn't work. He was a really great rooster, gentle and funny. We are going to miss him, Kyler especially is especially devastated, since he considered him to be his own pet.

I've ordered a few chicks from McMurray for delivery on Feb 7th, to include a new black cochin. It won't be the same, but maybe it'll help.

When I was looking for mites I would turn the birds over and dig through their feathers under their wings and up the breast to their neck. I never noticed any around the vent area. I didn't have the greatest luck with DE either, so switched to DE mixed with Sevin. Sevin may not be the healthiest alternative for the chickens, but neither is having mites.

GoneHomeGrown2, i'm sorry to hear about your losses.

I don't know what kind of ducks you had, but if you want some runner cross ducks, I have a bunch. They are mixed black and white.

Bob,
I am so sorry about Cachubby. So sad for your boys. I know it's heartbreaking when the kids are so devasted by losing a favorite. I hope their spirits(and yours) are lifted when that box arrives on the 7th.

Oh, that's terrible! I'm so sorry. Baby chicks always make the losses easier to handle.

WOW, what a helpful link!

Skivees, I apologize for not getting down there, we found some Americaunas real close to home here in New River and have started our Arizona flock with 6 of 'em.

Got the coop and run finished yesterday and added some shade/screen from Home Depot for a very reasonable $$. Built some ladder/ramps out of spare Bamboo, Roosting bar from the same source, four laying boxes made from 12 inch-square plastic milk crates and all set now.

12' X 20" coop/run all protected from varmints above and below!!

Bring on the easter eggs in 20 weeks or so. YAY for ARIZONA, beats the hell outta Seattle Gray-flannel Skies !!

Good afternoon all!

I have found the Duramycin had 0 effect on the Infectious Bronchitis. I had to order Tylan, because the IB kept popping up, and up, and up.

I have no sneezers since my second treatment of Tylan.

...The one turkey hen still has the sinuvitis though. Any suggestions on her? I am going to force-feed her some Tylan tonight. I never know how much they are getting when it is in their water.

Hi all,
My hen seems to be doing a little better today.

I put infant vitamins in her water last night and she stood to eat this morning! I gave her a sardine and some yogurt and she loved it. She still isn't interested in her regular food.

I checked for mites/lice and didn't see anything but she hates to be handled much and it's hard so I'm going to try again.
I went outside and checked the others (because they are easier) and didn't see anything. I also checked at night. I hope I'm not just missing them, but I can't seem to find anything. I was kind of hoping to find something so I'd have a reason for this.

Bob: Sorry about Cachubby. We lost my daughter's favorite hen over the summer. Chicks definitely help.

Bob - I'm so sorry he didn't make it. It certainly sounds like you tried everything.

LareePQG - I don't know for certain that it is IB (but IB appears to be the Best option, so I am hopeful), but I will keep your experience in mind and see what develops.

Both my sick ladies appear about the same in eye/face swelling and snot production this AM. On a positive note, Granola was a bit livelier this AM! She actually started preening in my lap and continued after I put her back in the kennel. I found a healing wound on the front of her neck in one of the featherless areas. Looks like she may have been injured in the bobcat attack at her prior house. The little Nameless One is still chugging along, eating and spazzing out whenever I get near her. She has a lot of missing feathers, but no injuries, or signs of mites. She is really skinny.

so happy that all my birds appear healthy at present and I'm getting more eggs than I've gotten in a long time.

Chicks are growing like crazy.. my huge MaranXAmeraucana has a cross beak... what is the cause of that???

Bob, I am so sorry about your rooster. That was at least the easiest of part of the group. That rooster was turning into a jerk and was slated for dinner. Thank you for the duck offer. I think I may be picking some others up on Thursday though along with some year old hens. It is still very kind.

Thank you everyonefor your nice comments.

I remember what I had missed last night. Tucson Tofu, sorry about the Lonley Only chick. That would have really gotten to me.

5Pinkarrows - Yeah, the coyotes are just doing their thing. I have had a friend suggest baiting them, but even if it wasn't illegal I could not live myself for causing them to suffer for trying to feed themselves. Now that will not stop me from shooting them given the shot.

From what I understand cross beak could either be a genetic flaw coming through or the chick just did not quite form right while in the egg. My Russian Orloff roo has a cross beak. If he didn't, I would have separated him and the 2 RO hens to breed. I was actually going to cull him with the other extra roos, but I think he had some kind of extra sense kick in and made himself into a pet. He still demands to be picked up quite often and just hangs out with me while I am doing chores.
