Arizona Chickens

I called the feed store today and wanted to post my memory of what they said they would be getting in.

First week of chickens: (Sept 14th) Rhode Island Red, Barred Rock, White Leghorn, Buff Orpington, Easter Egger

Second Week's Order: Black Australorp, Blue Australorp, Sex Links (forgot which kind) Silver Laced Wyandottte, Easter Egger

This is the Western Ranchman at 32nd street. Just in case anyone is going to be looking for those breeds of chick soon. These chicks come from Ideal in TX. :)
Are you getting any of them? I'm not looking for any, as I have just settled on sticking with just one breed and breeding what I already have.

I have chicks from Ideal, and they are more heat tolerant than from other hatcheries (I think).

You know, I was really hoping that they were going to say naked necks! I am going to wait and check back later in September or just maybe make an order to Ideal directly. Although it would be nice to have a smaller order. The blue Australorps may tempt me, however.... :)

So, you are wanting to try out the Naked Neck's? I just hatched a Bielefelder/Naked Neck mix last month that now lives with with @CaroleW along with it's Naked Neck mother.

I have moved from "oh my word that is an abomination!" to "maybe it can be cute" 😁

If I am being honest and not letting any chicken math get in the way, I should add only a small number of birds (say 2-4). So far I have ordered from a hatchery in the past, partly to get the chance to vaccinate for Mareks, but this time I am thinking to be practical and just get a few pullet chicks locally.

The Dominiques I have are great! But nobody sells them locally, so I'm thinking about other breeds known for their heat tolerance, and what could be a better conversation starter than Naked Necks! Plus I know a few people on this thread have them and just love them. I'm warming up to it.

Chicken's are like potato chip's as you can't have just one. They are addicting. I will be starting up another Bielefelder hatch going in about a week.

Although I'm happy with my birds from Ideal, the experience was awful. I've gotten young chicks from TSC, Cal Ranch, and have gotten a few/several batches direct from hatcheries. All that experience and everything I read on BYC got put to the test when the Ideal chicks failed to arrive after 2 days (this never happened with other hatcheries). I suggest seeing if anyone here has Ideal chicks/adults available, or heat-adapted naked necks available unless you're up for some casualties via USPS.

Yes, I know about the late deliveries thing. I've read a few thread's here about people ordering chick's from some of the hatcheries and they arrive late and some of them die soon after arrival. I've been just ordering hatching egg's and hatching the chick's myself. This way the chick's haven't been exposed to anything other then my incubator and brooder that is inside of my house. I am able to take proper care of them right out of their shell, and I have strong healthy chick's that way.

I was just looking at some of the hatchery site's, and some of them seem to either be out of stock for some of the breed's, or only have the males that are available? They must be keeping some of the pullet's now to replace some of their own flock's in the spring? I would also imagine that some of the hen's up north have already started the molting and most likely have stopped laying egg's too during that time.

I think that's the way to go, since you can have a rooster. There was even an article by some company about how chicks that arrive via mail, or from feed stores that receive the hatchlings by mail, need extra care and even higher heat at first. It's the extra day, or even the 2 days, in transit that set them up for pasty butt and its aftermath. Your birds coming straight from the incubator and right to the heat lamp, are spared that whole ordeal.
