Arizona Chickens

In all seriousness, as fantastic as Bielefelders are, I need a break from the little stinkers anyway. Having 4 different age groups that all hate each other is exhausting.

Ok, I just thought I'd let you know that my flock does have fertile egg's, so you would be able to get some right here in the state to hatch, instead of having to deal with the shipped egg's from other states. No rough travel.

I do appreciate that just feeling a little overwhelmed today. It rained all day and would you believe chickens are not the smartest animals on the planet? Silly creatures. 😂

Yes, I do believe it. After all they do have bird brain's. Most of the hen's are so busy with head's to the ground finding food to eat, that a predator could probably sneak up on them without a rooster to sound the alarm.

I'm in the Verde Valley. It's nothing to hit 110* in July/August up here.

Make sure the chickens have lots of shade and fresh water. As Rufus stated, mist the run several times a day. I even keep ice blocks, frozen milk jugs, or 2 liter bottles to put in the hen house and coop for them. They'll stand on the ice block and peck at it. You'd be suprised how much they will cool the area. I also freeze 16 oz water bottles and make sure to keep them in their water during the day.

Restrict their scratch. It's a "hot feed" and increases their metabolism to digest, causing their bodies to heat up. I also keep lots of watermelon, canteloupe, grapes, etc around for them during the summer months.

With a little additional effort on your part, they'll make it through the heat just fine.
Excellent ideas!!

I don't suppose anyone within an hour or so of Prescott Valley has any 1-10 day old chicks and would be willing to part with just one? This hatch looks like another bomb. Of course we have one little fluff ball who is currently imprinting on its own reflection. 😕
You might be able to find one or 2 at the TSC store up there, if no one else nearby has any for you.
