Some idiot decided the middle of the day was a good time to do street repairs. Don't get me wrong: our streets are horrible and I'm grateful they're trying to patch some of the gigantic holes, but NOW? It's 2PM and 109F!!

We had to turn off the swamp cooler and close all our doors and windows because the house was filling up with fumes from the asphalt and the diesel trucks and making me wheeze and vomit.

I can't imagine the impact those fumes would be having on chickens right now if we had any. The only place a coop can legally be situated on our property is just a few feet from the street and where the trucks are.

One guy sat in a diesel truck just idling the engine - not moving or doing anything! - right outside our door for two hours. Wth?

Do they not understand people around here use swamp coolers that suck in all the nearby air??

We're sitting in a closed up house in the middle of the desert in July and freaking melting. ^%$#@ I feel like I'm going to pass out and my head is pounding.

We knew they were going to do road work but given that it's SUMMER I figured they'd start early and quit by 11:00 or something. Whose bright idea WAS this?!!!!
Well they get to it when they can, so if it’s hot out the workers are out in it doing their jobs to make things better.

Many people have regular A/C because a swamp cooler does nothing when it’s humid outside, I’m sure they weren’t trying to hurt anyone and just wanted to be cool themselves while working on your road. Also, it’s SOP to let the truck idle as it takes time for air to build up again so the brakes will release if it was shut off. When the paving machine is ready for you, you need to be ready to get your load off and get out of the way. Time is money.

I know, it's 112 outside and 94 in our house. Many people here don't have A/C. This area is on the poorer side of town. I suspect there are more meth houses than houses with A/C. It's easy to forget that some of us struggle through the hellish summers with just swamp coolers and fans. Our car doesn't even have working A/C. Hurry up, November! 🍂

That must be difficult. I feel for you. Just the other day, we were having a discussion in our house amazing at how people lived here before the advent of A/C.

Even before electricity! I don't know how they survived. I understand native peoples thriving here but immigrants with northern European DNA like mine, living here with no electricity. I can't even imagine.
I think I'd have to build a house below the ground like they do on Tatooine. 🤣

That is actually a good idea. I'm surprised partially underground houses aren't more popular. The temperature underground stays cool year round and it's not like there's a high water table here. If I were building a house in the desert that's what I'd build. Houses here don't even have basements although I've heard that is becoming more popular with new housing builds in Phoenix. I guess it's because the caliche here is so hard to dig into.
