Holy moly we had three double yolk eggs today: from Casey and Goldie (olive eggers) and Snow (white leghorn). Made some delicious breakfast burritos.

I was wondering... what happens if a double yolk egg is fertilized? Do you get twin chicks or does one just kind of get absorbed into the other?

It varies but they rarely hatch.

I made another egg barter today: a dozen eggs in exchange for borrowing a chain saw. I'm cutting up the big tree that the tornado took down a few weeks ago. I already did the smaller branches with a sawzall and now I can finally cut down the rest of it.

The city is doing a big item pickup this week. In addition to the tree I'm also clearing out some other things that need to go, too. It's hot doing this kind of work right now but they only do the big item pick up a twice a year and it's worth it to declutter and get rid of stuff without having to pay someone to come pick it up.

We opened several more eggs with double yolks. They were all big olive eggs from Casey. That girl is a yolk powerhouse!

Be careful out there! It’s easy to get overheated out there even though it’s normal temps for now.

I just saw on the news it’s 46 in Flag ; I need to move!

46 sounds like heaven! This is the longest summer I can remember. Two months still to go before things return to normal. I hope we get lucky and have a few good days in September and October.

I waited until the sun went down to cut up that tree. I hope the neighbors didn't mind that I was using that chain saw until 9PM; most people understand that you can't do any real work until the sun has set. We moved everything from the yard and house out to the curb early this morning. It's great to have all that done and gone.

Casey gave us another double yolk egg today. No one has gone full broody yet but some hens, including Casey, like to very carefully tuck all the eggs in the nest boxes under them and sit on them for a while before they lay their own. They look so pleased and serene. If we had a rooster I think we would have some very good mother hens.

I can’t wait for cooler temps, currently the garden chores and taking care of the chicks can get a little annoying, I work outside from 4am till the afternoon so once I’m off work I really want to spend time in the garden and with the ladies but sometimes just can’t do it, the evenings have been getting better though, I’ve noticed a good difference over the last few weeks… Our white leghorn has given us 3 small eggs since Friday and my lavender Orpington and RIR are showing signs they’ll be next to feed us!! Hopefully later this week

I’m ready for cooler temps too! I was outside before the sun came up and it was actually quite pleasant. As soon as that sun hits it’s a different story though.

For the first time this summer, today I felt a breeze that was cooler than the air temperature. Usually the wind is hot. Today it was ahhhhh, so nice. Come on, fall!

Our hens are laying all over the place at almost any hour. I went out at about 4PM to give them some kitchen scraps of cantaloupe and spinach and one of our black Australorps laid a lovely brown egg while I was there. Right outside a nest box.

Yesterday I heard all this commotion around 8PM when they're usually asleep. I checked the camera and one of the white leghorns laid an egg right next to the sleep cuddle pile, complete with egg song and answering egg songs. It's an eggapolooza.

Today I learned that a couple of cheap grill brushes from Harbor Freight are great for cleaning hardware cloth. They remove all the poop and feathers and pine shavings and grime and even shine it up a bit. One came with a little scraper that I used to clean the corners of the doors and door frames where gunk was piling up, making it difficult to close them. One coop chore made a little easier, woohoo!

My white leghorn continues to lay, 5 eggs since Friday, my lavender Orpington will probably be next as she turned very red in comb and waddles yesterday and squatted today when I went to pet her…. The garden is starting to spruce back up with temps around the low 100’s… can’t wait to spend more time with the lovely ladies as fall moves in.

Oh,,,,, are those zinnias in the flowerbed??
I plant mine from seeds of course that I save. Very hardy plant, that will endure harsh conditions.
