Arizona Chickens

We come to Phoenix for the weekend about every few weeks to visit my inlaws. Normally, I spend Sat. fishing but having a group project would be a great fun way to spend the day.

I'm in! Seriously, if it happens, I'd like to participate (as long as it doesn't happen in the next two weekends - I have to guide some desert field trips).

Now my real question: is the treadle feeder Sheltie-proof !? A large part of my HUGE increase in food loss is due to a rescued sheltie, sweet dog, glad to have him, but my word he is on the move all the time and smart! And LOVES pellets, and the stuff out the other end of the hens too. He eats everything but the middle part (the hens). And soooo sneaky!

Eww my dane-mix eats pellets and poop too. Not all poops - she doesn't like the yellow foamy ones. Too much info? Sorry.

I think it would be fun to have a group project! The next 2 weekends are off limits for me as well, though.

Sounds like a case for the hiddencamera

. I am definitely going to throw everything at them I have! (like hub-caps mounted on the hanging chain or a glue trap...). When I am done with all my projects (next century maybe?) I will definitely tackle a couple of your ingenious feeders. My better half has discovered the do-it-yourself chicken plucker. Now he is all over that idea. He is really getting into this chicken thing

. Considering that he thought I was crazy when I started it all...

Unbelievable! Mine are not that smart yet. That is a tricky one. Definitely have to buy materials for those feeders...

Great! I'll try that too . I have tons of that stuff flying around. As a matter of fact when they start laying and know for sure where the cozy home is I'll let them out of the run and they can go clean up after the horses and llamas

Cool! I'll have to get some of that stuff. We have everything from tiny mice to klepto packrats.

Warning this is a little gruesome:
If you need to kill the offending packrats without killing anything that eats the the dead or dying animals (poison kills the pest, then the bird that eats the pest, then the bobcat that eats the bird...), a few people have sworn by grits near the mounds. They eat them, the grits swell, kills the ground squirrel or packrat, but not anything that happens to eat the dead or dying critter.

My rescued Dane loves to eat the scratch then has huge parakeet treat poos.

I'm in too! I'd love to meet you all and walk away with a treadle feeder!

My dogs love to "clean up" after the chickens.

Last time we were at the vet he was going on about what great shape my dog is in for her age. It must be the chicken poo.

Nope mine eats it all, the slurp-ier the better for the little guy.

Have a good day everyone! I'm going to remember to sign out this time and close all the windows!

I once gave my girls some yogurt that they didn't like and it just sat there. I thought I'd get them to eat it by putting in some BOSS. They wouldn't touch it, no matter how much BOSS I mixed into it. After a while I noticed that it was completely gone. The next day it was clear that the dog had eaten it. I also learned that dogs don't digest BOSS very well at all. My dog also eats the stuff that comes out the other end--she doesn't care about the color or consistency. We can smell the fact that it doesn't agree with her very well. Time to get to work too.
