Arizona Chickens

TT! :

AHH! My Aloha eggs got cold!

My setting hens sat on them for exactly 6 days. Today they were off them (husband left the crate open and another chicken booted them off) long enough for them to get cold. It could have been for 4 hours, I have no idea. I put them back on the eggs.

Are they going to be okay?

Had that happen, twice. Once a power outage, once the light burned out (it was the heat source.) They hatched late (about 2 days late) but still hatched.

Today I was out of the house for awhile. I came home and my newest baby quail knocked over their water. They were wet and cold. I lost 55 babies. I'm very upset. I'm not sure how they managed to spill the water unless the dog had something to do with it.

My broody was kicked off her eggs for close to six hours. I put her back on. 4 of the 7 hatched.
2 of the eggs died when they got cold. one was an early quitter.

Good morning Arizona!

NoSkiveez, how horrible for those poor baby quail!

I'm so sorry that happened.

5pinkarrows, you had a full day! I haven't been down to AZ Feeds on south 6th in ages, and not since I got chicks. I don't know if they still do, but they used to have a great tropical fish section!

constance, that was a funny story!

pastrymama, congratulations! Did you get sicilian buttercups? Those birds are beautiful! Looking forward to pics.

turkeybreeder, I loved the turkey pics. When I look at those tom's I'm reminded of a pet tom we used to have that would come up to us kids while we were playing on the ground and rub his head in your neck right below your ear. It always felt super tickle-y. He'd always come up right behind you to get you that way too so it was always a surprise!

TT! I hope your Aloha eggs hatch!

We lost half of the babies during the night.

I am so sad about it because it's my fault. We kept them in the garage, like we always do. We have never lost a chick from the cold and the garage is always fine. I even checked on them at 3am because I was getting worried. They were not even shivering and looked great. UGH!!! Well, I guess we will be heading back to Tucson today.

Hi,
The Ace Hardware in Queen Creek (still really far from you!) has chicks all of the time, with a good selection of breeds. They take really good care of them. They will also special order a type you are looking for and then you just buy the number you want and they sell the rest. It is a really cool Ace store ... it is like a hardware store, feed store and garden center all in one. Probably because it is the only place to get those items for a long distance.
Perhaps there is a hardware store or feed store in Globe that is similar? I would try calling around to them in your area and asking. Or you could drive around areas that have acreage and look for chickens and ask people where they got theirs or if they know of anyone who has chicks. You could also check the paper / classifieds.
Or if you drive to Phoenix I'm sure you could find the chicks you want. Just a long drive!

oh no!!!!!!! if you don't mind mutt babies and can wait a few weeks, you can have all the babies that hatch under my betty. i cannot keep them since i just got that order from mcmurrary. they would need to stay with her until they are feathered, then you could have them and you wouldn't need to worry about a heat lamp! i just want them to go to a good home.

they are beyoootiful when grown, i can't wait. if they do well and don't fly into the beagle's mouth, are heat tolerant like they are supposed to be and are good layers, i'll get more next year.

So sorry NoSkiveez. That's terrible.

Turkeybreeder, i'll keep working on dh and maybe bob's henhouse will hatch them for me?????

The feed barn in Mesa usually has chicks. I think they come in on Thursdays.

I got some chicks at the feed barn in Mesa last year.

There is also
Higley feed on Williamsfield West of Higley 3091 East Williams Field Road, Gilbert - (480) 988-2419
Aden's Hay Oasis 18206 East Williams Field Road, Gilbert, AZ 85295-6809 (480) 988-5015 ‎

You will probably have to call around to see if they have what you want when you want it.
You could also check Craigslist for local chicks, but that's kind of hit and miss. You don't know what state their chickens are in until you get there.

Recently when we were looking for chicks we did go to both Mesa Feed barn (chicks were healthy but not the types we were looking for - already had the ones we wanted that they carried), and also Aden's Hay Oasis. At Aden's Hay Oasis the day we went, the chicks in the stacked brooder all looked really ill, and the entire top rack had extreme pasty butt. As you went down they looked a little better. They also had two open brooders that did not have any chicks left in them. Maybe it was just an off day for them. When we went to Mesa Feed Barn their chicks looked good, but also were ones we already had. Lately Higley feed has only had one type of chick, so if you don't mind a flock of all one kind it would be okay (same with Cactus Feed in Gilbert). Petclub in Mesa on Country Club has a full feed store as well as pet food, and chicks. They had 3 varieties and all looked healthy (but told me my Silver Laced Wyandotte was an Ameraucana). The Ace in Queen Creek told me my Cuckoo Maran was a Silver Laced Wyandotte. Not a big deal because they are ones I wanted anyway, just a surprise! I have to say the Ace in Queen Creek had the best customer service I've ever encountered at a chain store. Every single person there was kind, very helpful, and went out of their way to be sure we had everything we needed. A very refreshing experience!
