Arizona Chickens

Bob's Henhouse :

5pinkarrows, that's pretty much my philosophy. I have to hope for the best because I can't protect them when I'm not home, and I DO have to work or the chickens will lose their house. I fret and stress over it every day when they are out and I'm not home. I keep thinking I need to get a guard dog to protect them, but haven't done it yet. One of these days.....

Llamas are known to protect alpacas, sheep, etc. from coyotes! Maybe hay is cheaper than dog food?

What standards are you using to decide what to keep? Best example of breed standard or great layers? And are you still processing the quail for that place? I think my hubby would get on board with something like that, but I have nobody to buy them down here. Would you have to get certified to process them for human consumption? Sorry for the inquisition.

Nope, no permit needed under ARS. I dont like having to kill anything let alone clean it. Anyone wanting to eat it would have to clean it themselves. ewww

I will be picking the best according to breed standards, then hopefully they will also be good layers too.

Mahalo - Im eager to see how many developed. The JG's are doing good. I thought I hatched 27 of 30, but Its 28 of 30. Lots of color.

Mahonri - Which ones are you rehoming?

Just had a hawk attack! Fortunately, the hawk didn't get anything and flew off alone. And I had just come in from cleaning the run and left the flock out ranging in the yard. I heard a huge commotion of chickens squacking like I've never heard and looked out the window to see this hawk swoop down and fly up and away and down into the neighbor's yard. I have no clue what kind it is, but it's the same one I have been seeing. It's like a beige color with horizontal brown stripes. My dh heard the noise and heard me fly out the door and figured that the chickens were fighting amongst each other because Bob's Henhouse was just here and he thought I snuck some ducks into the backyard!

I think all the girls are ok. I put them back in the run. Anyone have any idea what kind of hawk it is?

It's a good thing you were paying attention! Now, I am off to research and see if I can come up with a way to convince my dh that we need to expand this poultry thing.

AZDesertChickens - That is terrible! I'm glad your favorite was spared and I hope your injured pullets make a recovery.

I don't usually rush to shut my coop in the evening, I guess I'll start. I have to agree with Bob's Henhouse and 5pinkarrows though.
The ladies are sooo happy out roaming, that I am going to continue to take the risk and let them range about the yard when I can.

WOW, you were lucky pastrymama! Did the hawk look like one of these two?:

The one on the left is a Red Tailed hawk and the one on the right is a Cooper's. The Red Tailed hawk is very large, probably twice or more as big as the Coopers (in the photo it is actually eating the Cooper's pictured on the right). The Cooper's in the pic above used to hunt lizards, mockingbirds, mice and pigeons nearly daily in my yard. It never came after my chickens though--at least not once they were adult. I met a person here in Tucson though that had a Cooper's enter their chicken run through the human door and then walk through the pop door and grab and kill a seabright. The Red Tailed hawks are very scary. They don't fear anything at all.

Constance,

Uh yup, from what I could tell, that's pretty much what this hawk looks like. It's not tremendously large, but big enough to know it not a pigeon or some other kind of bird. It's of good size that I would worry about my cochins and sussex. They are not banties, but not very big for being large fowl. It's a very good thing the grow out pen is done for all the new babies that are in the garage and betty is in a secure place with her eggs and she can stay in there with her chicks until I find homes for those. I wish it would eat the mice that are in my compost.
