Arizona Chickens

The first pic she posted is a Cooper's, but it looks a bit different than the ones we have here in Tucson (the second link didn't work for me). I started my post before constance posted and got distracted before I finished and missed her post. I agree that it sounds like a Cooper's. They are very common, and with your size description, that pretty much seals it. Also, you mentioned the horizontal brown stripes. You can't see them well in either my photo or the one constance provided, but it's a pronounced characteristic of the species. The other potential species is the Harris hawk (they typically hunt in family groups) but the color description doesn't match (good thing too, those guys are like the wolves of the sky). All my birds are pretty big, but I remember a few stand-offs with the Cooper's walking around the tractor to get in at them when they were teenagers and around the same time there were several stand-offs between the hawk and the dog. The hawk eventually ignored the chickens and would take prey in the yard mere feet away from me. I really miss that bird, but I'd be a bit worried if I had mid-sized or smaller birds.

ETA: it could also be a Sharpshinned. That would be even better. They are very difficult to distinguish from Cooper's, but are noticeably smaller.

I have only seen it mid day, so I have no clue why I let the chickens roam so late today. But it's not like my run is covered either. At least out in the yard they can dart under the trees or the trampoline. I guess it's back to early morning roaming and in by noonish. I had just started letting them out later so they would all lay before so they wouldn't lay in the yard.

ca, have any llamas for sale?

What do you do with a llama, or what do you get from a llama? I heard donkeys would chase off coyotes as well, but don't really need a donkey either.

pastrymama we've got smaller hawks that have been cruising our area VERY regularly lately. I haven't seen it catch anything, but I think it's looking for something smaller like chicks, prairie dogs, small rabbits, etc. I'm glad your hens escaped injury.

Yep, no hens! Our neighbor has 15 roosters and no hens! We just like to annoy the other neighbors.

Honestly, the thought of hens and eggs just makes me nervous...

Hi Dakoda,
How loud are your Serama roosters? I'm thinking of getting some Seramas, but I do live in a development. Do you think the crow would be too loud for the neighbors? I figure you would be an expert with 5 roos, and a neighbor who has 15!
Thanks!
Michele

I'm glad your chickens are all okay!!! How scary! I know a person who was washing dishes and looking out the backyard and a hawk carried her chihuahua away. I'm sure it happens to chickens sometimes too!

THAT IS EXCITING!!!!!! How long is incubation?? I wonder how fast they grow....can't imagine keeping them in my spare bedroom for a month, like the chicks. Bet they would keep the coyotes out of the backyard.
