Well we did it, or should I say she did it? Finally had a broody sit long enough to hatch out some chicks. 4 little ones out of 7 she was sitting on. she kicked one egg out and I think shes giving up on the remaining 2. So this brings on a whole new set of questions.... She's already separated from the other hens into a metal bucket thing but does it need to be something that the chicks can get out of too? I'm assuming I just need to provide some chick starter since there isn't much foraging left to do in the yard. So send all of your suggestions my way so I can give this group a chance.

Here are the now 3 week olds in their brooder that they've already began to outgrow.

I didn't even know there was an app to post photos. I'm using and iPad and I can only move to the next page at the bottom. I haven't tried the new format from my desk top yet.

Yes I did hear of an app for the iPhone. It was somebody on the forum. So I was just checking to see if anybody happened to know the name of it? Also if there's anybody available around 4 to 430 during the week please let me know?? I would love for somebody to come look at our flock. We are newbies PM us.. Mon, tue, fri, sat, sun..Are best thank you

Ok So as long as it is a blue or green egger with a brown egg breed. Get ya! Thanks

Not exactly. For example, if you cross a Ameracuana roo with a Barred Rock hen, you will get a Easter Egger who will lay some shade of minty green to aqua, because she'll get the gene for blue egg shell from her dad, and the gene for a lightish brown coating from her mom. If you put the Ameraucana roo from the first example over a Black Copper Marans hen, you will get a Easter Egger who will lay some shade of dark olive green, because she'll get the gene for blue egg shell from her dad and the gene for dark brown egg coating from her mom. This type of cross is often called an 'Olive Egger' because of the distinctive color of the eggs, and lately its become kind of a 'thing' as a designer cross, because who doesn't want a new color in their egg basket :D

Of course, trying to make an Olive Egger using a Easter Egger for the blue egg gene part of the cross can be iffy, because you don't know if the Easter Egger has two copies of the blue egg gene or one, so there isn't any way to know if all of the pullets will get a copy of the blue egg gene, and lay the olive eggs you want, instead of some shade of brown. Of course, this didn't stop me from trying it

azkat: so how do those little possible OEs look? still roo-ish? i really hope you get at least one hen out of them. i have 2 aloha roosters that hatched out the same time those did and its hilarious that 1 is already crowing and the older boys i got from you arent even trying. you can DEFinitely tell an aloha roo right away, makes culling easier. also fyi, waiting to hear back from sommer, i have been busy so was late in emailing her about this potential project roo. will let you know asap.

Is the Mum still with them? We did this and I kept the babies and the Mum together till I could put them all back with the flock so she would protect them.

Am in putting in a Mittleidler Garden, between the girls and the garden I am kept very busy, getting back as often as I can to check AZ Chickens. I am so behind.

Dose anyone ealse have family members like mine?

My sister is here on her monthly vist, one of the girls is hers, last night I found out she STRONLY believes that chickens are vegetarian. She will only eat vegetarian eggs. She eats only a little meat. Now, it is important to give some back ground: a few years ago she would not eat tofu, she told me it was bad for you because of fermentation. Now... She eats it because it is good for you. She reads, or hears something, with a PHD or a Dr associated with the name and it is gospel. She now has osteoporosis, she says it is old age, I say it is because she goes on a 4 week fast purging ritual, 1 wk no food, water, honey, a few drops of lemon juice. Week 2, boil vegiables drink the water (no salt) do not eat the vegitables. Week 3, eat the vegitables and drink the water, week 4 add small amount of brown rice.

Now she demand that her chicken must not be given meat orinsects...... It poisons the eggs. What am I to do????????? Family! Everyone in my family is colorful in some way except for my youngest daughter.

How am I going to convince her chickens are not and will never be vegetarian. I agree, that it is wrong to give cattle ground up meat in their feed, they are vegetarians. She clams monkeys and gorillas are vegetarians. It's on film.... In the wild they all will eat meat. Giving chickens meat that is questionable (animals that died from disease or rotting) is very wrong. My goodness, I believe that if you lay down in a chicken pen long enough without moving they will check you out for dinner.

Well, if you are the one taking care of them and providing their food, TOUGH. She can take her hen and go home if she doesn't like the way you care for her (my opinion; you of course will have to do as you choose).

Have her go to browneggblueegg.com and contact the website owner. Alan is a doctor (PhD in physics), and will happily tell her that chickens are omnivores. Pretty sure he would also tell her that monkeys and gorillas are also (for goodness sakes, look at their teeth!), but I don't recall ever discussing monkeys or gorillas with him.

Have her contact Dr Peter Brown at First State Veterinary supply; he will certainly tell her they are omnivores, too.

Personally I will not use organic chicken feed BECAUSE it is vegetarian. I read labels. There are a very few that use kelp or fish for protein; those would be okay. But chickens NEED animal protein.
