Ladykotadoria - I'm in Tucson. It isn't going to be very cold in Phoenix tonight. It can actually get much colder than it is going to be tonight and your chickens will still be fine. They don't need supplemental heat at all. Just make sure they have an area that is out of the wind and rain.
In 2010 Tucson got down to 18F, and it was quite a bit colder than that at my house - one of my young roosters refused to sleep in the chicken house, and I couldn't get him out of the mesquite tree even with a ladder. He spent the night outside in the wind and cold and was fine.
Living in a boat must have been amazing! My husband would like to do that someday.
well Mahonri, i have just joined you in the "De-Rooed Club". my guess is the fireman behind us had enough and filed the complaint, or it could have been the mentally unstable man 2 houses down that likes to rat out everyone for misc things. the letter from the city came on tuesday, the roo left last night and the inspector knocked on my door this morning. case closed, no questions asked, perhaps the fact that i was wearing a fire department sweatshirt helped? surely i wouldn't lie. but i really did send my beautiful boy awaythe hens don't quite know what to do, but fortunately, they will join him soon after accomodations for the flock can be made and fertile basque eggs will prevail! but what a bummer.![]()
and oh my, did i mention the inspector was incredibly GORGEOUS????????????? wowza![]()

I have two right now and have some eggs in the bator for NYD hatch. I would like to breed them eventually as it seems there is no one in Tucson who does and I know tons of people who are interested. I got my pair from Rachel. She has extremely reasonable prices and is willing to meet you here when she comes down from douglas for a show or something. I can give you her e-mail if you want it, just PM me.Hello,
I'm Kate from Tucson and have been learning a lot from this thread and from byc overall- so glad to have found such great resources. Now for a question- is anyone in the Tucson area keeping seramas- I would really like to keep a few- already have a mini coop built- so if anyone has any, even as far as the Phoenix area, let me know.

Dang!! Did he count your birds? My guy did! I only had 19 at the time. I need to ask my wife if she thought he was gorgeous. He was of mexican decent.
I have a roo at present but he doesn't crow. Sad thing is, he doesn't do anything with the ladies either.... and he is so gorgeous.
I'm sure that out of my 21 polish chicks that at least half are roos so I'll be needing to rehome them eventually and I'm guessing that at least 2 of my 5 Icelandic chicks are roos so... I HATE not being able to have ROOS!
It was, it belonged to a family member, I had to leave come summer so he could go sailing. I loved it. There was a love sick corker you could hear most nights. Someone practiced a clarinet every night for an hour, it was so coal, the sounds of the deep. When you wake up, get your cup of coffee, step outside and see a great blue Hebron setting on you dinghy, it is AH SOOM. We had a one eye seal, Pop Eye, that would swim silently up next to your dinghy at night when you were going or coming, then exhale, sending you three ft out of your boat. He would push himself up out of the water to see the affect he had on you. The first couple of times I screamed, then I started to expect him. He stopped startling me when I stopped reacting to him. Then there are the dolphins.
It is a different world with its own rules. Live and let live, be there for me and I will be there for you, boat people accept you for you, not your past.
As for my girls, I am ejecting them from the house pen when I finish their coop. I used to raise budgies in Minnesota, I put up 6 mil sheeting around their outside flight. I had birds that came in to eat only. The inside aviary was kept between 40 and 45 degrees in winter. If a little budgie can handle it a well feed chick should be fine.
You said you have not turned on the heat in your house yet ether? I use oil lamps, I have 5 no2 burner lamps and 5 hurricane lamps. The three table lamps take any chill out and makes my living room quite comfortable. They put out a lot of heat and lights the room nicely. The 3 are cold blast Dietz #80, I used these on the boat, no electricity or water. Hurricane lamps are so much safer then table lamps, 2 are typical table lamps, 3 of them have heavy basses and are much more stable.[/URL]![]()
