Arizona Chickens

. What do you think 1900 farmer would think of us? Dogs were once outside only animal. They are such pets, loved and cared for, eat 100% better then typical chickens of 100 yrs ago.... 50 years ago....
My greatgrandparents had a pair of banty housechickens about 95 years ago.

Brrrr! It is so cold. A homeless guy came to the door looking for a blanket. I have a blanket I could have given him, and a coat as well. It belonged to my father; he died in 1976, so I guess he will never need it.

But I was afraid to open the door to give them to him. So much bad stuff has happened in the neighborhood. Now I feed bad about it.

We had an overly crazy guy stop at our house a few years ago for the same thing. I am always armed, but I told him to go sit on the curb so that I could set the blanket outside and that he had better stay sitting until I had closed the door again. He was really twitchy the whole time, but he followed directions.

It's hard to find a balance between your safety and helping someone in need.

I've been having a PM conversation with Gallo del Cielo and I mentioned that after his loss of two birds and my loss of seven birds to predators, I don't go out side without my .45 strapped to my waist, I just wonder how safe anyone would feel if they knocked on MY door and I answered with that piece on my hip.

Seriously, folks, I have a CCW (Carry Concealed Weapon) permit and I AM certified as a teacher.

(Edited to add: Oh, and yeah, it's been cold here too in Golden Valley

For anyone that has a lot of these folks coming to your door, or you see them as you access or exit the freeways, here's a little something for thought. Carry some S.O.S. emergency 'gifts' for these poor folks. A Zip bag with things like a toothpaste, tooth-brush, stockings, under-ware and maybe a shirt or sweater. Then instead of looking away from them as if they didn't exist, you could easily give them a gift of needed things rather than dollar bills if you think they will use the money for something other than food. Just use your imagination and think up something you might think they need and pre-package needed things for them.

Just rambling here .... )

Question: With this cold snap we are having, do we have to protect our girls combs and feet from frostbite?
If that's a silly question, just laugh at me. My first cold season with backyard chicks. Only have 3 and they
have become our pets. They have an A Frame tractor set up. Upstairs lots of pine shavings. Have also
covered the top with a plastic tarp to keep any major draft from entering any areas DH didn't caulk. Thanks

Forgot to mention am in Northwest Phx and got to about 25 last night. Supposed to get colder tonight.

Some newspaper back east (NYC, NY), has put to gather the locations of everyone that has a CCW. Not wither or not they even have a gun. He is trying to go national.

Which is friendlier, red sex links or black sex links?

Seriously, "Friendlier"? You crack me up.

Neither is friendlier, but black sex links are egg laying MACHINES... I had one once that went 93 days straight laying me an egg EVERY DAY!

I'll have room for 4 chickens, but one spot is already reserved for Two-Shoes, my only chicken that survived the dog-attack a few years ago. She is living with our friends now, and apparently not laying. They keep asking if they can eat her. So that leaves room for 3 chickens.

I want friendly chickens that are great layers... I'm going to buy from desertmarcy.

I'm thinking:

1 Black Sex Link
1 Russian Orloff
1 New Hampshire
1 Rhode Island Red
2 Barred Rocks

That should give pretty good odds of ending up with 2 - 3 pullets, right?

And yes, Mahonri and Cheese, friendly.

We have a lot of homeless people in the neighborhood. They hang around because the city put a homeless shelter near here. But they throw them out onto the street when they find them drunk or doing drugs or having sex. They live in the alleys and break into empty houses. Last week they burnt the house across the street. Most of the people living here are without papers, so they are reluctant to call the police. They come to us and say "somebody should call the cops," but what they really mean is that somebody legal should call the cops.

Our kids won't let us go to the alley with the trash unless they are with us. They pack pistols; I just have a board with a nail in it.

It is like with the alley cats, I don't like them but I don't want to see them go hungry or suffer. I just wish they would go somewhere else.
